Editorial Review

ABOUT DUNKLIN MEMORIAL CHURCH, INC.

From a remote location 20 miles outside of the small town of Okeechobee, Fla., Dunklin Memorial Church, Inc. offers non-denominational Christian residential recovery for men. The treatment program, founded in 1962, lasts 10 months. Medical detox is not available on-site; clients must have been drink- and drug-free for four days before entering the program.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment occurs in five phases — induction, orientation, regeneration, inner healing, and discipleship.

The initial and most enduring tool residents learn is journaling, which, the facility says, allows residents to communicate directly with God. During the first phase of treatment, each new client partners with an “older brother,” who is in the last phase of treatment. Stage one also includes weekly meetings, during which residents hold one another accountable for their behaviors.

In the second phase of treatment, orientation, residents focus on trust and ownership. They reflect on the decisions that led them to their current situation, and make an amends list of ways they have harmed others. During the third phase, regeneration, residents learn about the physical and psychological effects of chemical dependency, and begin to take on responsibilities such as chores. They also participate in small counseling groups.

The inner healing phase includes classes on rejection, grieving, sexual addiction, and forgiveness. In the final phase, discipleship, clients take on leadership roles (like “big brother”) and have opportunities to build self-worth.

Family programming is offered every weekend. It involves small group therapy and discussions on codependency, forgiveness, and reconciliation. There’s also an Advanced Marriage course and, in the final phase of treatment, couples may prepare an exit plan in the Discipleship Marriage class.

Program graduates have an option to remain for another three months for additional support and to make choices about their future, including transitioning to community resources. Those interested may pursue the one-year Servant Leadership Training (SLT), which combines intense studies with internship and mentoring. SLT prepares those with a calling to serve in recovery ministries around the world.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There currently is no information on the facility's website or elsewhere regarding its treatment staff. However, reviews submitted to Rehabs.com indicate staff are graduates of the program.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The campus is tobacco-free. Alumni reviews of the accommodations are slightly above average with two alumni giving five-star ratings, one alum granting the facility's accommodations four stars, and the final alum polled by Rehabs.com giving just three stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Alumni polled by Rehabs.com offered glowing reports, giving five-star ratings for the level of staff support and treatment effectiveness, each. Many indicated they would strongly recommend treatment. For example, Armando wrote: “It is amazing and out of this world.”

Some alumni gave slightly lower or no ratings for holistic options, indicating that it isn't a strong focus at the facility. They also noted that leisure is not a high priority. One anonymous reviewer said: “Not enough down time to rest,” and Nathan added: “No TV, internet, cell phone, etc.”

Positive feedback continued on Google, where Dunklin Memorial Church received a 4.8-star average rating based on 29 reviews from mostly alumni and a few loved ones. Many called the experience "life changing." In a representative review, Rick wrote, “This place is AMAZING!! Saving men's lives through the power of Jesus Christ!!”[1]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com gave very positive feedback, both awarding top five-star ratings to major survey categories, including treatment effectiveness. Carolyn commented: “They are the best they truly have love in their hearts for addicts,” and the other reviewer, J.M.S., wrote: “A Very strong spiritual, christian program.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

The sole staff member who responded to the Rehabs.com poll reported: "Every one on staff has been through the program, so they understand the nature of addiction" and noted the facility has a "spot free reputation."

FINANCING

The 10-month program costs $4,000. According to the facility’s website, nobody is denied treatment because of inability to pay.

[1] https://goo.gl/aSO6Sv
