ABOUT BETTER WAY OF MIAMI, INC.

Founded in 1983, Better Way of Miami is a private nonprofit providing residential and outpatient addiction treatment to individuals in high-risk populations, including clients who are homeless, have legal issues, and/or are struggling with co-occurring disorders. Better Way also offers programming tailored to clients living with HIV/AIDS, a modality provided by just 22 percent of all substance abuse treatment facilities in the state.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility's website, access to medical care, including psychiatric treatment, is available on-site. In centering on a 12-step recovery approach, treatment programs emphasize both personal responsibility and the importance of spiritual support for maintaining sobriety and overall wellness.

The residential program involves an average stay of just over 60 days. During this time, clients attend Alcohol Anonymous (AA) and/or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings, as well as participate in counseling and educational groups. Job preparation training and recreational therapy are also offered.

After completing the residential program, clients may transition into a day or evening intensive outpatient program (IOP). This typically lasts three- to five-months, and consists of 20 hours of group and individual therapy each week. Clients develop relapse prevention techniques and life skills such as money management, communication, and assertiveness. They continue to participate in 12-step communities and receive assistance with job placement, HIV prevention, and connections to community resources.

Additional outpatient services include less intensive, individualized treatment plans, drug and alcohol testing, and family education groups. Every level of treatment incorporates ongoing clinical assessment.

Graduates of a Better Way have access to an active alumni association. Longterm, sober housing support is also available for clients experiencing homelessness and a chronic substance use disorder.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to the facility's website, Treatment team members include medical staff, licensed social workers, behavioral health technicians, and substance abuse counselors. Some are also able to provide bilingual services.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The 55-bed residential facility houses clients in simple, dorm-style rooms. A photograph on The Miami Foundation's website features Better Way's gated campus with a courtyard and multiple buildings. A 36-unit apartment complex is located across the street from A Better Way of Miami, and offers subsidized housing to former homeless clients participating in outpatient treatment.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two former clients surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave A Better Way Miami positive feedback. Both reported that the facility was clean and well-maintained, and noted that they would recommend the facility to family and friends. They also awarded the facility four or five out of five stars for its staff's level of training and experience. "It's a good program," Gus wrote in a representative review.

A Better Way also fared well on secondary sites ], where it earned an average rating of 4.1 out of five stars based on 46 Google reviews[1] and an average rating of 4.8 out of five stars based on 30 Facebook reviews[2] (which the facility has the ability to edit). The majority of alumni who left comments across both sites described the rehab as a strict yet effective program for recovery. "This place keeps it real and strips you from what you may be used to but overall for alot of us thats exactly what is needed in order to recover," Ariel told Google in a representative review.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The two loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date were generally more critical of the facility than alumni. One survey respondent noted that the facility's program was not long enough to be effective, while the other suggested that staff should have been stricter with clients. The latter reviewer nevertheless awarded the facility four out of five stars for its staff support, its staff's level of training and experience, and its counseling options.

The other reviewer told Rehabs.com that they would not recommend the program, rating the effectiveness of treatment just one star and indicating that they did not participate in the process as a family member.

FINANCING

Better Way of Miami accepts Medicaid and is supported by local funding sources and a combination of state and federal grants. It is among the only 36 percent of Florida facilities to accept Medicaid.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/BetterWayMiami/reviews/?ref=page_internal
