ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCE CENTER, INC SOUTH

Mental Health Resource Center, Inc. (MHRC) is a Florida-based nonprofit that provides a wide range of mental health services for adults, adolescents, and children. Located in Jacksonville, Fla., the MHRC South facility currently provides crisis intervention, short-term inpatient care, and supportive housing for adults struggling with primary psychiatric disorders. One of two facilities operated by Mental Health Resource Center, Inc., the MHRC South facility also typically provides outpatient services for adults. However, at the time of this writing, the facility’s outpatient clinic has been temporarily closed due to renovations.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, patients first undergo an initial assessment, which includes a psychiatric evaluation and physical examination, to identify the primary psychiatric disorder. To promote stabilization, the facility provides clients with a structured, supervised schedule of individual and group therapy sessions, educational classes, recreational activities, and social rehabilitation workshops.

Along with therapeutic and educational activities, the facility also utilizes medication management to minimize the symptoms of the mental health disorder. The goal of the short-term inpatient program is to quickly stabilize the client and refer them to a less-restrictive level of care. The program also encourages participation of family members and significant others, when appropriate.

To help ensure a successful integration back into the community, clinicians provide referrals and linkages to community-based services, as well as a comprehensive discharge plan. These plans may include referrals to New Outlook apartments, the organization’s supportive housing complexes, vocational and supportive employment opportunities, and other services to facilitate a supported transition. Although MHRC South does not currently provide an outpatient program, clients may also be referred to the MHRC North facility, also located in Jacksonville, Fla, to continue outpatient treatment.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Accredited by the Joint Commission, MHRC South employs a team of psychiatrists, registered nurses, mental health counselors, mental health counselors, case managers, and psychiatric technicians.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Although information is scarce concerning the living arrangements and amenities of the inpatient facility, MHRC South provides clients with 24-hour access to medical attention. The facility’s website describes the inpatient facility as having a “24-hour structured and supervised therapeutic environment.” MHRC operates two supportive apartment complexes. New Outlook I is a 16 one-bedroom apartment complex, and New Outlook II consists of 24 one-bedroom apartments.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The sole former client polled by Rehabs.com at time of writing praised all aspects of the facility, offering perfect five-star ratings for the treatment staff’s level of training and experience, its counseling options, and its discharge planning. “It was good,” the alum wrote simply.

Secondary sources reveal more polarized perspectives, though many reviewers also reported positive experiences. On Google, for example, 14 reviewers collectively shared an above-average rating of 3.1 out of five stars.[1] “I finally have a doc who listens,” five-star reviewer Krista wrote. Yet Diana claimed that the facility “cannot actually help with mental illness,” adding: “I will say this, they are pleasant people but they just cant do anything for you.”

MHRC fared even worse on Yellowpages.com, where 10 of the 11 reviewers each gave one-star ratings.[2] “I was here for 7 days and I hate this place,” wrote Elise in a representative statement. “It does not deserve any stars. The staff is ruse and the therapist don’t help. The food is served cold and the meat is mystery meat. It’s disgusting, all you do is sit around and do art all day.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing were moderately critical of the facility. A sister of a client gave the facility three stars for its counseling options, family participation, and cleanliness. “My sister went there. It seemed very basic but it's better than nothing i guess,” she wrote.

A brother of a client tended to agree with these opinions, though provided a higher four-star rating for the facility’s family participation and a five-star rating for the facility’s cleanliness and upkeep. “My brother attended the facility and I want to believe that they provided him with assistance,” he wrote.

FINANCING

MHRC accepts a range of private insurance plans, Medicaid, and Medicare. According to its website, the organization also provides discounted rates for uninsured individuals who financially qualify, depending on their income and the number of household members.

[1] https://goo.gl/RG6Env
[2] https://www.yellowpages.com/jacksonville-fl/mip/mental-health-resource-center-inc-south-17043737
