Editorial Review

ABOUT DANIEL

Founded more than a hundred years ago, Daniel Inc. is a residential psychiatric treatment center for children and teens ages five to 17. The facility is set on 10 wooded acres in Jacksonville, Fla.

According to the center’s website, the mission of Daniel is to “improve the lives of children and families.” The core values of the facility is commitment, respect, empowerment, and passion.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility’s website, in order to be admitted into the program, children must be Florida residents and recommended for inpatient treatment by a Florida-licensed psychiatrist or psychologist. Potential clients must have also undergone previous crisis hospitalization or similar services that did not successfully resolve their emotional and behavioral problems.

Treatment is individualized and length of stay varies depending on each client, however the average amount of time spent in the program is three to six months. Called the Statewide Inpatient Psychiatric Program (SIPP), Daniel’s residential treatment is designed for children exhibiting severe and persistent symptoms of mental and emotional distress.

The program includes individual, group, and family counseling, along with psychiatric treatment and medication management if necessary. Specialized therapies for speech, occupational, and physical improvement are also offered. Additionally, treatment modalities such as art therapy, trauma-informed treatments like eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), behavior management, and sexual reactive and sexual abuse therapy are all offered at Daniel.

Children can continue their education while at SIPP by attending school each day on-campus with a full-time certified teacher through the "Hospital Homebound" program. In addition to complying with state and county educational requirements, this program enables students to earn necessary school credit.

All family members are involved with their child’s treatment and kept aware of their progress. They also receive training and family counseling while their children are in treatment.

Discharge planning is comprehensive and includes access to medication management, therapy, and case management services. Parents can also call a 24-hour support line while they adjust to having their child back at home.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The facility’s website indicates the Daniel treatment team includes a psychiatrist, a licensed therapist, a nurse, a behaviorist, and a recreation specialist.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Children are housed in three secure on-campus cottages, according to the center’s website. Amenities include a swimming pool, a basketball court, an art room, a computer lab, and plenty of outdoor space for recreation and play time.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has yet to receive any feedback from former clients of Daniel, but reviews on Google are quite positive.[1] Receiving an average of 4.6 out of five stars to date, the facility earned three five-star ratings and two-four star ratings, with no further commentary from these five individuals.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The two loved ones to report to Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave Daniel mixed reviews.

One anonymous sibling told Rehabs.com that the program took very good care of their brother, and awarded it five out of five stars for its family participation and cleanliness and four stars for its counseling options, its treatment of co-occurring disorders, and its staff’s level of training and experience. As a weakness, however, this sibling listed that the facility was short-staffed, which the other reviewer agreed with.

The other loved one noted they wouldn’t recommend the center, and gave it two or three stars for every metric evaluated, such as treatment effectiveness, accommodations and amenities, affordability, and counseling options.

FINANCING

According to Daniel's website, the program accepts a number of private insurance plans, as well as Medicaid and CMS Title 19 and 21.

[1] https://goo.gl/yWzhxW
