Editorial Review

ABOUT NEW HORIZONS OF THE TREASURE COAST, STUART

Nonprofit New Horizons of the Treasure Coast runs nine facilities in four Florida counties, which between them provide a full spectrum of mental health and addiction treatment services for children and adults. This outpatient facility, located just off Highway 1 toward the south of Stuart, offers outpatient care and case management services for adults and children; like 76 percent of addiction treatment facilities in Florida, the center treats mental health disorders as well as addiction. Medical detox isn't available in Stuart, but it is offered at the main campus in Fort Pierce.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Clients follow programs tailored to their needs, based on the findings from comprehensive social, psychological, and psychiatric evaluations.

As well as counseling, clients might receive case management services including ongoing monitoring, referrals to external services, and assistance finding housing. The center also provides outpatient psychiatric services, which are designed to support clients as they remain in the community, avoiding relapse and building resilience; these psychiatric services might include the prescription of medications. Clients will also learn skills for independent living, such as how to manage their medications, stay healthy, get ready to return to work, and function as part of a community.

Clients may be referred by the courts, a community agency, or their family, or they may be self-referred.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The New Horizons team includes physicians, nurse practitioners, and licensed mental health providers. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility two out of five stars for its staff's level of training and experience.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com hasn't yet polled any alumni of New Horizons' Stuart facility, but the center has mixed feedback on Rehabs.com-approved secondary sites, with a 3.1-star average rating based on 11 reviews left on Google.[1] There was little overlap between the criticisms of the facility: one reviewer complained that the center had lost their paperwork, another that they were turned away because they had no insurance (despite the promise of a sliding fee scale), and a third, James, implied that the center was "cruel."

However, the positive reviewers repeatedly praised the center's staff: "The therapy and Dr here are absolutely amazing highly recommend," Julie wrote in a typical comment. And one alum, Catherine, went so far as to call the facility her "Saving Grace."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single review submitted to Rehabs.com is mostly negative. Although the anonymous reviewer gave the center solid four out of five ratings for its family participation and ability to treat co-occurring disorders, and noted that treatment was affordable and easy to pay for, they added: "If you do end up at that facility, there is a 9 out of 10 chance that you will use or drink again." They put this failure down to a lack of knowledge about the disease of addiction and a lack of activities, and they also gave the center a lackluster one-star rating for its holistic offerings.

FINANCING

Like around 62 percent of facilities in Florida, New Horizons offers a sliding fee scale for its services. The center also accepts private insurance as well as Medicare and Medicaid. It's one of the 40.6 percent of Florida facilities that receives some public funding.

[1] GoogleReviews
