ABOUT PRIDE INSTITUTE AT FORT LAUDERDALE HOSPITAL

Founded in 1986, the Pride Institute offers inpatient substance use, dual diagnosis, and mental health treatment to the adult lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. The facility is one of 159 substance abuse treatment facilities in Florida with specially tailored LGBT programs. Pride Institute operates out of Fort Lauderdale Hospital, a full-service, private rehab and mental health center. A detox unit is located on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

At all levels of treatment, Pride Institute programming addresses the problems faced by members of the LGBT community who are struggling with substance use.

During detox, clients are introduced to the 12-step model of recovery, participate in recreational therapy, and meet daily with a psychiatrist and medical doctor, as well as receive medications and supervision to ease the withdrawal process.

Inpatient treatment is individualized based on each client’s identified primary areas of need. Treatment is based on 12-Step and includes up to three individual counseling sessions per week, daily group therapy, and psychoeducational groups. Subject to approval from the staff psychiatrist, some clients also attend off-site 12-step meetings during their stay. The aim of inpatient treatment is to thoroughly familiarize clients with the first two of the 12-Steps.

An alumni aftercare group offers free weekly support meetings.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The Pride Institute treatment team includes psychiatrists, medical doctors, nurses, master’s level therapists, and mental health technicians. Physicians on the medical staff generally are independent practitioners rather than employees of the organization.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Fort Lauderdale Hospital is a four-story building on a tree-lined street in the city’s downtown area. Pride Institute occupies an entire floor, which houses LGBT drug and alcohol rehab clients with mental health clients. The facility provides transportation to 12-step meetings off-site.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, three alumni who reviewed Pride Institute provided mixed feedback. Two alum surveyed by Rehabs.com provided more detailed impressions and polarized opinions.

The critical alum gave low one- and two-star ratings for the effectiveness of group and individual counseling sessions, as well as the respect shown to clients. Overall, the survey respondent, Chris, was critical of the staff's attitudes. "Very "angry" professionals," the alum wrote. .

On the positive end, one reviewer described the facility as a “Great place." The third alum gave perfect five-star ratings for the respect shown towards clients and the staff's level of experience and training. “My counselor not only helped me with my drug issues but also helped me overcome a lifelong stuttering issue… They gave me the tools to take ‘responsibility of my own actions. rescue myself,” they wrote.

At the time of this writing, secondary sites yielded little coverage of Pride Institute, but mostly negative reviews of Fort Lauderdale Hospital: 2.4 out of five stars based on 57 reviews on Google reviews, one star based on 16 reviews on YellowPages.com, 3.5 stars based on three recommended reviews on Yelp, and 2.1 stars based on eight not recommended reviews on Yelp.[1] [2] [3] [4]

Of note, two reviewers on Google reviews rated their experience at Pride Institute as perfect five stars, such as Jessica: “Today I am 20 months sober.
