ABOUT HALIFAX

A part of the extensive, 678-bed Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla., Halifax Health Behavioral Services operates one of the 45 (6.3 percent) Florida adult behavioral services departments that offer inpatient care for adults (and, when appropriate, adolescents aged 14 and over) struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues. This is one of only 73 (10.2 percent) treatment facilities in the state where detox is available on site, but is only accessible to the patients who have been admitted for a co-occurring disorder. Halifax Health is a designated Baker Act facility, meaning it is authorized to receive involuntary clients.

A separate facility operated by Halifax Health Medical Center provides behavioral health care, including substance abuse treatment, for children and adolescents ages two to 17.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The facility offers full medical care alongside clinical treatment. Programs draw from an interdisciplinary range of modalities, and take a holistic view that aims to treat the client’s physical as well as mental health. Though the center’s website notes that programs are individualized to suit clients’ needs, and that clients are strongly encouraged to take an active role in their own treatment, it does not detail the treatment modalities in use at this center.

In the state of Florda in 2016, 2.2 percent of adolescents ages 12 to 17 exhibited alcohol use disorder, and 4.3 percent of adolescents in this age range in demonstrated substance use disorder. Halifax is among the 21.4 percent of facilities in Florida to provide adolescent-specific programming. This service, however, is located in a separate building from that of the Adult Behavioral Services.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to the facility’s website, staff includes physicians, nurses, social workers, and recreational therapists. The six loved ones polled to date were mostly satisfied with staff support and counseling options.

Facility staff are experienced and well-trained: 3.8/5 stars

There are many counseling options to choose from depending on the client's preference: 3.2/5 stars

ACCOMMODATIONS AND AMENITIES

Visitors are welcome weekday evenings and weekend afternoons. Little other information is available, but the six individuals polled to date were pleased with this category.

The facility is clean and well maintained: 4/5 stars

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com had not yet received reviews directly from alumni of this facility. Secondary review sites yielded coverage only of the hospital in general, as opposed to the adult behavioral services department in particular.

On the facility’s Facebook page, which Halifax Health may have the ability to edit, it received an average rating of four out of five stars across 647 reviews at the time of this writing. Note, none of the commentary addresses experiences particular to the facility’s substance abuse or mental health offerings.[1]

Similarly on Yelp, the hospital on the whole has a mediocre rating of 2.5 stars from 15 reviewers to date.[2] None of these comments pertain to the behavioral health unit in particular, either.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Of the six family members and friends polled by Rehabs.com to date, five would recommend the facility, and the other remained neutral on this question. These loved ones were most pleased with the level of family participation at this facility, and also appreciated the exercise & leisure offerings and the facility's connectivity policy.

Family/loved ones are able to participate in treatment through facility programming: 4.2/5 stars

This facility offers excellent leisure, exercise, and extracurricular options: 3.5/5 stars

The connectivity and visitor policies are fair: 3.2/5 stars

Reviewers repeatedly praised the staff, and when asked to note facility strengths, "Nice employees," "Ability to get medicine correctly adjusted," and "Cost, effectiveness," were all listed by separate anonymous loved ones. Food, on the other hand, was repeatedly criticized.

Less positively, two of the reviewers reported that treatment had not taken a sufficiently long-term view: “A downfall of the facility was their long term plan. Some it dont work for when they get out,” one anonymous reviewer wrote, and another added, “Release patients to fast before ready to be released.” As such, the facility's admissions and discharge procedures received three- and four-star ratings across the board.

FINANCING

While the facility’s website does not provide any info on pricing it does say that this center accepts most insurance policies, and offers financial assistance for qualifying clients. Additionally, according to Halifax's Health Behavioral Services HealthGrove page, Medicaid and Medicare are both accepted, and a sliding fee scale may apply.

The six individuals polled to date felt the treatment was affordable.

Treatment is affordable and/or payment plans, scholarships, or financial assistance are available: 3.7/5 stars

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pg/halifaxhealth/reviews/?ref=page_internal
[2] https://www.yelp.com/biz/halifax-health-daytona-beach-4
