Editorial Review

ABOUT THE RENFREW CENTER OF FLORIDA

The Renfrew Center of Florida, one of nearly 20 Renfrew Centers across the United States, offers specialized treatment for women and teenage girls with eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating. Experiential therapies, individual and group therapy, and nutrition make up the structure of the center’s residential and outpatient programs.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Women and adolescent girls struggling with eating disorders have several program options to choose from at Renfrew Center of Florida. Many programs offer women opportunity for self-expression in art therapy and for exploring the relationship to their feelings and bodies in dance therapy and psychodrama.

At the highest level of care available, the residential treatment program provides women and girls with a recovery setting that is structured, supportive, and intensive. Participants are encouraged to share their challenges and successes with others, both in group and informal settings, and build new, supportive relationships with one another. In addition to these core offerings, the residential program has specialized tracks for substance use and trauma.

Running five days a week, the day treatment program is designed both as a step-down option from residential care and as a structured, supportive alternative to it. Women similarly receive personalized plans organized around individual, group, and family therapy groups. Psychoeducational and/or experiential in nature, these groups address a range of issues including self-esteem, grief and loss, sexuality, body image, and eating patterns.

Meeting three nights a week, the intensive outpatient program (IOP) is ideal for those seeking assistance after work or school. As with other tracks, women in IOP attend group-based treatment focused on coping skills. Group therapy is a fourth and final option intended for those unable to commit to the prior three.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The clinical team at Renfrew Center of Florida consists of a licensed psychologist, a registered dietician, and an eating disorders specialist, a widely published author and lecturer whose works spans more than 30 years.

Women in residential treatment also have access to physicians, a 24-hour nursing staff, a full-time medical practitioner, and creative arts therapists.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Women receive “three basic meal plans” based on their unique nutritional needs. Those with special dietary restrictions, including food allergies, vegetarianism, and Kosher, can also be met upon request.

In addition, five Rehabs.com survey respondents gave the center average ratings of 4.4 and 4.6 stars out of five, respectively, for its accommodations and meals.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

All three women surveyed by Rehabs.com to date had positive things to share on their personal recovery experiences. An anonymous alum called the Renfrew Center “a wonderful pace to recover,” and former client M.S. “greatly enjoyed this facility.”

Nina, a third reviewer, told of “awesome” primary therapists and a helpful treatment process that incorporates a client’s unique needs. “There are also negatives,” she confessed. “It is very strict, there is a level system so people can just work the system to be released, etc.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Feedback from two loved ones was more mixed. An anonymous relative, the only Rehabs.com reviewer to have shared less than four stars for treatment effectiveness, felt that the program was “Not very effective” for women with co-occurring addiction issues, in addition to an eating disorder. Still, they deemed the Renfrew Center of Florida a “nice facility” with staff who “seem to really care, for the most part.”

Also highlighting what they found to be a “Caring staff,” another loved one succinctly told Rehabs.com: “Client came home better.”

FINANCING

According to its website, the Renfrew Center works with most managed care companies and has preferred provider status with many private insurance plans.

Two of the five Rehabs.com survey respondents (both loved ones) complained either of pricey treatment or insurance issues.
