ABOUT McCALL CENTER FOR BEHAVIORAL HEALTH - CARNES WEEKS CENTER

Part of private, nonprofit McCall Center for Behavioral Health, the Carnes Weeks Center (CWC) is located in Torrington, Conn., and provides short-term intensive residential treatment for substance abuse and behavioral health issues for adults. Detoxification services are not available on-site. In addition, The McCall Center offers an assortment of outpatient services and flexible recovery housing options through other locations.

Within the state, CWC is one of 29 substance abuse treatment facilities that offers short-term/less than 30 days of residential non-hospital care. Offering gender-specific services, the facility is also among 58.6 percent with specialized programs for adult men.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Residential treatment at CWC is individualized, highly structured, lasts for 28 days, and begins with an initial assessment. Therapeutic activities include one-on-one and group counseling, family therapy, addiction education, and immersion in the 12-Steps. Groups focus on topics such as anger management, relapse prevention, sober living, gender-specific issues, and trauma. Experiential holistic activities, including yoga, drum circles, movement therapy, and mindfulness practices, also are offered.

Clients wishing to stay in treatment longer than one month can transfer to the McCall Center’s Hotchkiss House, which offers extended residential services that may last up to six months. McCall also offers 10- to 12-week intermediate residential treatment, as well as a residential program for men referred from the Department of Corrections.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to its website, “CWC has full-time, on-site, highly credentialed staff.” The treatment team includes psychiatrists and certified addictions counselors. The two alumni who responded to the detailed Rehabs.com survey rated the staff’s level of experience and training very positively: perfect five stars and four out of five stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The CWC intensive residential treatment complex is a stately manor on a peaceful residential street. The facility has beds for 20 clients. Photos on the website indicated that the expansive stone building is situated on an attractively landscaped setting and has a bright and airy interior. The three alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the accommodations and amenities as well as meals and nutrition the top five-star ratings and one assigned them a negative one star.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, of the eight alumni polled by Rehabs.com, six submitted overwhelmingly favorable opinions about the facility. The two alumni who evaluated a series of survey metrics provided further positive impressions, such as J.S.W., who awarded the top five stars to affordability, connectivity, counseling options, facility cleanliness and upkeep, family participation, level of staff experience and training, and likelihood to recommend, as well as four out of five stars to holistic offerings.

J.S.W. cited “Counselor one on one, great nutrition and classes” as strengths, but noted as weaknesses “Not enough outside or in coming AA or NA meetings.” In all, this alum wanted Rehabs.com to know: “They teach so much to remember it all, treatment is not just about drugs.. It teaches a new life to live.”

E.J.D., who also processed an additional set of metrics, assigned the top five stars to conflict resolution, consistency, facility cleanliness and upkeep, flexibility, safety, staff support; four out of five stars to staff experience and training; and three stars for connectivity/visitor policies. E.J.D. was particularly impressed by the kind and committed staff that showed close caring and attention during a medical emergency requiring hospitalization. “The Director herself came by to see me, picked me up and dropped me off...The chef went out of his way to provide me with a special diet that was low or no sodium. He researched cirrhosis to accommodate me,” they wrote.

However, a one-star reviewer felt an employee acted “inappropriately” and, for that reason, wanted Rehabs.com to know: “I would not recommend utilizing this facility to anyone whom themselves or family members require assistance for substance abuse as it is clear that the McCall center does not value their clients and is only profiting ...”

On secondary sites, CWC received high positive coverage to date: 4.4 out of five stars based on eight reviews on Google and the top five stars based on one review on its Facebook page, which the organization can manage. [1] [2] Of the nine reviewers in total, seven awarded the facility perfect five stars.

Reviewers repeatedly commended the staff and the program overall, such as K.K. on Google who, in a representative review, wrote: “McCall by far, is the best place to go for, Inpatient, outpatient, and all of prevention services! The staff is so down-to-earth and make you feel like there is hope!"

FINANCING

According to its website, the McCall Center works with many insurance companies, but does not provide any further information. In addition, the organization offers payment plans and sliding scale of rates.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://facebook.com/pg/mccallcenterct/reviews/?ref=page_internal
