Editorial Review

ABOUT BLUE SKY BEHAVIORAL HEALTH LLC

Based in Danbury, Conn., Blue Sky Behavioral Health is a private addiction treatment facility offering a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and an intensive outpatient program (IOP). Additionally, Blue Sky offers what it describes as a "unique residential alternative": an Enhanced Treatment Program that provides outpatient treatment and furnished rental apartment. In addition to those struggling with problematic substance misuse, the center can accommodate individuals struggling with mental health and co-occurring disorders.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to Blue Sky's website, the purpose of PHP is to provide acute treatment and therapy, diagnostic clarification, relapse prevention, and to provide an alternative to inpatient care. PHP offers group and individual therapy sessions as well as weekly medication management, if necessary.

The website further notes that IOP is a less acute treatment option that offers the same services as PHP but with less frequency and intensity. According to a 2016 SAMHSA survey, of 224 treatment facilities in Connecticut, 45.1 percent offer IOP and 12.9 percent offer PHP.

The Enhanced Treatment Program (ETP), the supportive independent living program, includes clinical services, life skills training, social and recreational programming, and vocational and educational services. Counseling in ETP is offered in individual, group, and family settings.

The center's addiction treatment use the 12 Steps alongside a range of evidence-based modalities such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Blue Sky Behavioral Health's staff includes a psychiatrist, two psychologists, social workers, master's level therapists, and certified addiction counselors. Each client is assigned a therapist and a life coach.

Blue Sky is one of 64 treatment facilities (28.6 percent) in Connecticut that is certified by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The rental apartments are bright and modern, with full kitchens and all the other elements of a home. Clients may have their phone, laptop, or other electronic device in their accommodations, as long as it doesn't interfere with their treatment. All residential facilities are non-smoking.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Though Rehabs.com has not received any reviews from alumni to date, secondary review sites yielded mixed feedback that skewed positive. On Google, Blue Sky received an average rating of 3.3 out of five stars based on 11 reviews.[1] On its Facebook page, which staff can manage, Blue sky received an average of 3.9 stars based on 33 reviews.[2] On Yelp, two alumni left scathing reviews, each rating the facility one star.[3]

Negative reviewers on all three sites tended to criticize the staff and the management "Poorly run program. Staff doesn't care. Groups are mostly people venting with no real guidance from the therapists," A.B. wrote on Google in a representative review. Positive reviews, however, tended to focus on the quality and effectiveness of treatment.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date gave a highly negative review and would not recommend this facility. In particular, the anonymous reviewer gave the facility one star for treatment effectiveness, holistic offerings, and its family participation, two stars for counseling options, and three stars for its ability to treat co-occurring disorders."My daughter was left with no plan on where to go once she left the facility. Nothing was put into place for her," they wrote. The reviewer did, however, leave four star ratings for Blue Sky's accommodations and amenities, connectivity, and cleanliness.

In contrast, Patricia, the sole loved one to leave a review on Facebook, praised Blue Sky in a five-star review, indicating that the treatment was highly effective for her son.

FINANCING

The facility accepts several insurances, including Aetna, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, and United Behavioral Health. Medicaid and Medicare are not accepted, but the center does have a relationship with a healthcare loans company to increase the accessibility of treatment. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center five out of five stars for its affordability.

CONCLUSION

In May of 2018, Blue Sky Behavioral Health LLC was purchased from previous owners. In court filings for the purchase, the new ownership cited plans to participate in Medicaid, though its unclear if the facility currently accepts it.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/blueskybehavioralhealth/reviews/?ref=page_interna
[3] https://www.yelp.com/biz/bluesky-behavioral-health-danbury-2
