<p><strong>ABOUT GRAND JUNCTION VETERANS HEALTH CARE SYSTEM</strong></p> <p>Grand Junction Veterans Health Care System (VHCS), located in Grand Junction, Colo., provides <strong>homeless veterans</strong> a broad range of medical services, including treatment for <strong>substance use disorder and psychiatric conditions</strong>. Serving over 37,000 Veterans each year throughout the Western Slope region of Colorado, the Grand Junction VHCS offers treatment in both <strong>inpatient and outpatient</strong> settings.</p> <p>Run by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Grand Junction VHCS is one of six <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/CO17.pdf" target="_blank">treatment facilities in Colorado</a> (1.6 of all facilities in the state) operated by the federal government. Veterans must also be in need of case management services for serious mental illness, substance use disorder history, or physical disability. Those who are most vulnerable are given preference for these services. </p> <p>Substance misuse treatment services are offered through various sub-programs for homeless veterans. According to the VA Wester Colorado Health Care System website, the <strong>Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV)</strong> program offers outreach, case management, and residential treatment services to help veterans transition from living on the street or in institutions to stable housing situations.</p> <p>Operated in community-based outpatient clinics, the <strong>Homeless Patient Aligned Care Team (H-PACTs)</strong> program provides comprehensive and individualized with care that leads to permanent housing for veterans. Substance use and mental health treatment are a significant part of this program. H-PACT clinics integrate <strong>clinical care, social services, enhanced access and community coordination</strong>. Veterans can walk into H-PACT clinics for care at any time without appointments.</p> <p>The <strong>Veterans Justice Outreach (VJO)</strong> and <strong>Healthcare for Reentry Veterans (HCRV)</strong> programs work to prevent homelessness by helping veterans with mental health or substance use issues access VA services as they transition from prison back to the community. According to a <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/CO17.pdf" target="_blank">2017 SAMHSA survey</a>, 57.5 percent of rehab facilities offer programs specifically tailored to clients in the criminal justice system.</p> <p><strong>STAFF CREDENTIALS</strong></p> <p>Staff of the VHCS Healthcare for the Homeless consists of Homeless Patient Aligned Care Teams which include medical staff, social workers, mental health and substance use counselors, nurses, and homeless program staff.</p> <p><strong>ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES</strong></p> <p>The VHCS hospital has <strong>53 beds total</strong> with 23 acute care beds and 30 Transitional Care Unit beds. According to a <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/CO17.pdf" target="_blank">2017 SAMHSA survey</a>, the average number of designated<br /> beds in hospital facilities in Colorado is 14.</p> <p><strong>WHAT ALUMNI SAY</strong> </p> <p>The lone alum surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing had mixed opinions that skewed negatively. Out of five stars, the anonymous alum gave four stars to the facility's treatment of <a href="https://www.recovery.org/co-occurring-disorders/recovery/" target="_blank">co-occurring disorders</a> and <a href="https://www.recovery.org/pro/articles/the-pain-of-addiction-in-the-family-how-counseling-can-help/" target="_blank">family participation</a>; three stars to experience of the facility's staff, it's cleanliness, and its exercise and leisure activities; and two stars to the facility's counseling options, <a href="https://www.recovery.org/forums/discussion/7265/what-is-holistic-treatment-and-how-can-it-help" target="_blank">holistic offerings</a>, connectivity, and overall treatment effectiveness.</p> <p>Overall, the alum indicated that they would not recommend this facility to others. "Very little coordination. My initial experience was very poor," they wrote.</p> <p>On the facilityβs Google page, the facility received an overall rating of 3.5 out of five stars based on 56 total reviews.<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-1"><sup>[1]</sup></a></small> Most reviews, however, were regarding the medical center, not specifically the homeless services or substance misuse/mental health treatment services. </p> <p><strong>FINANCING</strong></p> <p>Though the Grand Junction VHCS website does not provide information regarding treatment costs, the <a href="http://nationalincomelimits.vaftl.us/LegacyVAThresholds/Index?FiscalYear=2018" target="_blank">United States VA website</a> indicates that free medical care is offered to veterans with no dependents who have an annual income below $32,715.
