Editorial Review

ABOUT SOBRIETY HOUSE, INC.

Sobriety House, Inc., is one of Colorado's oldest treatment providers for individuals struggling with substance use disorders. The Denver-based non-profit organization offers a 28-day, gender-specific, intensive residential program, which is among the just 6.8 percent of Colorado’s 381 treatment facilities to provide short-term, non-hospital residential care. This can be followed by outpatient and long-term sober housing programs, one of which is The Phoenix Concept, a Sobriety House transitional program for men.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Clients must be sober at the time of assessment for admission to Sobriety House. When necessary, the facility’s staff can recommend an outside detox program first.

The intensive residential program is identified as Phase I of a continuum of care. Clients participate in evidence-based therapy focused on sobriety maintenance and development of emotional and communication tools, including stress management, assertiveness training, and emotional awareness.

Clients attend several daily group sessions, along with in-house 12-step meetings and weekly individual counseling. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the core approach at Sobriety House, Inc., while clients may also participate in a trauma-oriented Seeking Safety program.

According to the facility’s website, various treatment staff members practice such additional modalities as motivational interviewing and mindfulness training. Some staff are also trained to provide rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT), a practice available at fewer than one-third of Colorado facilities. Dual diagnosis treatment to address co-occurring mental health disorders is also available. Residents receive ongoing medication management and drug screenings, and loved ones are encouraged to attend a family education day.

After the initial 28-day residential program, clients may continue receiving support through a transitional residential program, usually lasting between 30 and 120 days. Some clients simultaneously participate in one of Sobriety House’s outpatient programs in the Denver area.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Sobriety House, Inc., employs master’s-level therapists, and certified and licensed addiction counselors. According to the facility’s website, many staff members are in recovery themselves.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The Sobriety House, Inc.’s main Denver campus features three historical Victorian homes serving residents in the Phase I program — two for men and one for women. Although most residents share bedrooms, private rooms can be arranged. Amenities include on-site yoga and local recreational activities, according to the facility’s website.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews from alumni of Sobriety House’s intensive residential programs. However, at the time of this writing, feedback was overwhelmingly favorable on both Google and the facility’s official Facebook page, which the facility can manage. On Google, 24 individuals contributed to an average rating of four out of five stars.[1]

Two reviewers expressed concerns about a lack of security, while one indicated that the program wasn’t overly strict, but supported clients who were committed to working the program. She cited an absence of “proper counciling” and short-staffing as weaknesses, granting one or two stars apiece for family participation and the staff’s level of training and experience. The facility’s cleanliness and upkeep received a three-star rating. Similarly, both reviews from loved ones of alumni on Google were critical, reporting insufficient support for clients.

FINANCING

According to information available on the Sobriety House, Inc., website, the 28-day residential program costs $6,525.
