ABOUT JEFFERSON CENTER FOR MENTAL HEALTH SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROGRAM

Jefferson Center for Mental Health (JCMH), which has been operating for more than 60 years, is a large, nonprofit community partnership that serves three Colorado counties. Addiction and chemical dependency treatment is available to individuals with a dual diagnosis of substance use and a co-occurring mental health disorder. Treatment is offered as part of an array of programs, including specialized groups for veterans and youth.

Although the Denver-based facility’s primary focus is on serious and persistent mental illness (SPMI), clients also can receive integrated basic medical care through a Family Health Clinic. Since the summer of 2017, non-medical detoxification services are available at a Wheat Ridge site that JCMH took over from Arapahoe House, a separate facility that continues to provide other residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Substance use disorder treatment programming at JCMH facilities is designed to identify and build on strengths for clients who are struggling with some form of co-occurring mental illness. In the state of Colorado, the center is among 58 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities that provide specialized treatment for clients with co-occurring disorders.

Substance use treatment begins with an intake process and associated assessment and evaluation. Clinicians develop personalized outpatient treatment plans for clients that include individual, group, and family counseling.

Medicated-assisted treatment (MAT) and case management are provided, as is a range of evidence-based practices, which include cognitive behavioral (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapies (DBT). Clients are subjected to random urinalysis and receive continuing care planning and referrals.

Individuals needing detoxification and crisis stabilization support may be referred to JCMH's partnering facilities. Colorado Crisis Services in Lakewood is a walk-in clinic focused on providing immediate and transition-oriented care. The detox unit in Wheat Ridge, now operated by JCMH, provides short-term, observational and motivation-oriented, residential care during a client's withdrawal process from drugs or alcohol. Following a typical stay of 12 hours to three days, clients receive referrals and assistance in connecting with another facility for continued treatment.

Residential treatment is offered in a more intensive program for clients experiencing SPMI. One residential track functions in collaboration with the criminal justice system. JCMH is among 57.5 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities in the state with specially tailored programs for criminal justice clients.

EPIC is JCMH's treatment program for adolescents and young adults who have experienced psychosis. As with other opportunities for treatment through the organization, EPIC includes substance abuse care. Among the more than a dozen evidence-based modalities applied in addiction to CBT and DBT are motivational interviewing, acceptance and commitment therapyt, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. All treatment is trauma-informed. In Colorado, the center is among 36 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities with programs for adolescents and among 40.2 percent with programs for young adults.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to its website, “Jefferson Center is a licensed mental health and substance use treatment facility, providing the best evidence-based practices available in the behavioral health field.” Mental health professionals on staff have a range of specialties, including treating co-occurring substance use disorders. Substance abuse counselors must hold an advanced certification or license in addiction counseling as well as a master's degree. Some services are available in Spanish.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has yet to receive alumni feedback to date.
