ABOUT EDCARE SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER TRACK

With facilities in Denver, Kansas City, and Colorado Springs, EDCare provides treatment for adults struggling with eating disorders, as well as a co-occurring track for those also struggling with a substance use disorder, placing it among the 201 (50.4 percent) facilities in the state to treat co-occurring disorders. Three levels of treatment are offered: partial hospitalization (PHP), during which clients can choose to stay in supportive housing operated or arranged by the facility; intensive outpatient programming (IOP); and traditional outpatient treatment.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Individualized treatment plans follow a program unique to EDCare called CAMSA. The approach focuses on empowering clients in their holistic recovery process through "connection, acceptance, mindfulness, a sense of self, and action." As part of the facilities' milieu approach, counselors, peers, and clients interact in a therapeutic community, which prioritizes responsibility.

All levels of treatment utilize evidence-based modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapies (DBT), along with a variety of experiential therapies such as art, music, and movement. The substance use disorder track is available at the PHP, IOP, and outpatient levels, providing educational sessions that address the relationship between the two disorders, coping skills, relapse prevention training, and planning for ongoing recovery.

On the first day of participation in the PHP, each client can expect to undergo a full physical exam and a psychological assessment. Programming fills 10 hours a day, seven days per week, with reduced hours on the weekend. The IOP, which many clients attend as step-down, transitional treatment following PHP, involves an individualized schedule, averaging four hours a day for three to seven days a week.

Clients enrolled in less intensive outpatient treatment draw from several available modalities, including individual, group, and family counseling, medication management, and groups addressing such topics as trauma and family dynamics. EDCare also offers specialized tracks for athletes.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Master's level counselors make up the core of the EDCare treatment team, supported by psychiatrists and psychologists. Facilities also employ registered art therapists.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The most intensive level of treatment, EDCare's partial hospitalization program, is offered at its Denver and Kansas City centers. Female clients from out of town have the option in Denver to stay at the facility's off-site Connections House. The 13-bed, staffed residence is close to the treatment facility, and transportation is provided. Kansas City also offers peer-supported housing. Website photographs of the treatment facilities feature comfortable furnishings, bright windows, and a variety of open and private meeting spaces.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com has received survey responses from three former clients of the Denver EDCare facility, each of whom would recommend the program to others. On a scale of one to five, the alumni rated the effectiveness of treatment three, four, and five stars, respectively. Negatively, two reported relapsing after completing treatment, and one wrote that they did not receive sufficient follow-up.

Despite these critiques, two reviewers praised the personalized approach to treatment provided. One former client offered perfect five-star ratings for the the facility's counseling options and ability to treat co-occurring disorders. "I have been to multiple facilities and would go back to ERC over anywhere else," alum Kelly wrote. All three alumni also rated holistic offerings a perfect five stars.

However, the cost of treatment was a concern to all three alumni, although they also noted that insurance coverage was good. "It's a very expensive program and I couldn't do it without my insurance and the grant for housing," L.E. wrote. "Grant for housing and they waived my $700 deductible," another anonymous alum added. They also agreed on the quality of accommodations, rating the facility's cleanliness and upkeep, meals, and nutrition four or five stars apiece. Exercise and leisure activities fared less favorably with two reviewers, reflected in two- and three-star ratings.

On secondary site Yelp, feedback was more mixed at the time of this writing, with a three-star average rating based on five reviews.[1] Though C.S. praised the staff for their "patience, support, kindness," and B.S. referred to the staff as "very knowledgeable and highly skilled," two negative reviews comment upon staff lack of consideration. Repeated concerns with insurance policies were also reported.

On Google, 13 individuals gave the facility an average rating of 3.8 out of five stars. While some alumni also reported issues with insurance, many praised the facility's staff. "This Center has truly made a difference in my life. The staff are amazing," Rob, a representative reviewer, wrote.[2]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Two loved ones submitted completely opposing opinions to Rehabs.com to date. One of these individuals indicated that they would highly recommend the program, while the other wrote that "it was a terrible experience." They agreed with alumni that the facility was clean and well-maintained and that treatment was expensive, but offered contrasting ratings for accommodations and effectiveness.

One friend wrote anonymously that the program's "strict rules" were a strength and gave four-star ratings for family participation and counseling options, as well as five stars for treatment of co-occurring disorders. The other loved one, the mother of a former client, rated all aspects of treatment from family involvement to holistic offerings and counseling just one star. "It was a prison...not what was depicted on their website," she concluded.

FINANCING

EDCare publishes the cost of outpatient group sessions at $30, however no further details are available regarding pricing. According to its website, EDCare accepts "over 35 insurance contracts, including some state-funded programs."

[1] https://www.yelp.com/biz/edcare-denver-denver-2
[2]GoogleReviews
