Editorial Review

ABOUT CEDAR SPRINGS HOSPITAL

Cedar Springs Hospital is located in Colorado Springs, at the foot of Cheyenne Mountain, a short drive from Denver. Cedar Springs is a mental health treatment center that offers acute psychiatric care for children, adolescents, and adults. In addition, the facility offers residential and outpatient treatment for adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.

Cedar Springs Hospital has specialized programs for women and members of the military. According to a 2016 SAMHSA survey, the facility is also one of only eight hospital-based treatment centers in the state to offer medical detoxification on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility’s website, chemical dependency treatment programs combine individual, group, and family counseling, psycho-educational programming, SMART treatment, 12-step work, recreational therapy such as yoga classes, and medication when appropriate. Most programs last for up to 21 to 28 days, though longer programs are available to treat complex post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) for members of the military.

Clients with co-occurring disorders also receive individual, group, and family therapies, education about addiction, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), anger and domestic violence management, trauma work, a fitness program, life skills, and relapse prevention lessons through an approach of trauma-informed care.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to the facility’s website, the staff includes psychiatrists, nurses, mental health technicians, and licensed therapists. For the military program, key staff members have a military background.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Cedar Springs Hospital is an 110-bed facility that has provided treatment since 1922. The tour on the facility’s website indicated that residents share simple double rooms, and the food is served in a cafeteria-style dining room. There also appears to be a volleyball court and a playground for children.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Alumni reviews are mostly negative. Three of the four alumni polled to date offered low one- and two-star ratings for a range of surveyed metrics, including counseling options, respect shown to patients, and the amount of staff support. One anonymous alum described the facility as “useless”, adding that “no help given,” while another alum felt that they were “given little respect and the staff was not supportive at all.”

On Google, Cedar Springs Hospital received an average rating of 2.6 out of five stars based on 69 reviews at the time of this writing.[1] Alum Marcie S. felt “forced and threatened” to go to Cedar Springs Hospital, where she received “inconsistent messaging from staff.” Kara M. wrote that during her time at the facility she “was highly medicated with powerful drugs that did nothing but make my anxieties more prevalent and more of a problem.”

However, some appreciated the dedication of staff members and the quality of treatment."The staff at Cedar Springs is excellent," alum Troy wrote, while another alum added: "I have been through 3 rehab/detox facilities and this one is by far the cleanest and most helpful one."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Rehabs.com has received feedback from two loved ones of former clients at the time of this writing. R.R.C. gave a perfect five-star review for their loved one's treatment, including five-star ratings for the counseling options, the level of staff support, the level of family involvement in treatment, the quality of the mental health programming, and the facility's cleanliness. They added: “Serious treatment. No frills but comfortable. Great recreation daily.”

Another anonymous loved one gave a less enthusiastic review. When asked if they would recommend the facility, the loved one gave only three out of five stars. While noting that the staff was always present, they added: "Some make the patient feel hopeless."

FINANCING

The facility’s website notes that it accepts most private insurances, including Aetna U.S. Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna Behavioral Health, and TRICARE®. Medicaid is not accepted for substance abuse programs, and the website notes that Medicare covers medical detox only.

[1] GoogleReviews
