ABOUT H.O.W. HOUSE

Located in eastern Los Angeles County, H.O.W. House provides sober living housing and structured recovery support to men who have completed more intensive treatment for addiction and substance abuse elsewhere. The nonprofit facility is named for its foundational values of honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness. Clients pursue employment and education while meeting legal obligations and accepting increased responsibility.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The men at H.O.W. House are expected to obtain a job or begin a full-time school or vocational training program at the beginning of their residence. Staff members are available to assist with the processes. In cases for which employment and education are not possible, clients participate in 30 hours of community service per week.

Expectations for residents include regular 12-step meeting attendance, participation in weekly house meetings, and doing chores at the facility. Each resident also undergoes regular drug or alcohol use testing.

In addition to a supportive living space, the facility offers educational sessions addressing addiction and recovery, as well as help connecting with other social services locally. House staff members are also available to provide progress reports and advocacy in court appearances.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

All three treatment staff members listed on the H.O.W. House website are in recovery; the program director has more than 25 years. Two team members hold advanced certification as alcohol and drug abuse counselors and the house manager has received formal training in sober living operations.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Photographs on the H.O.W. House website feature simply furnished, large, shared bedrooms. Cable TV and phone services are provided, along with food and household supplies.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Feedback from former clients of H.O.W. House is almost universally positive at the time of this writing. Rehabs.com has received survey responses from one alum, who rated the effectiveness of his treatment four out of five stars and would recommend the program to others at the same level.

Some aspects of both treatment and accommodations fared less favorably, including two-star ratings for options in counseling approaches and for exercise and leisure activities. Opportunities for family participation, an aspect not discussed on the facility's website, received four stars. The capacity of the staff to address co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorders also received four stars, perhaps in regards to the staff's provision of referrals.

Admissions and discharge procedures and the affordability and worth of the program's costs were all rated three stars.

Two of three Google reviewers awarded perfect five-star ratings and the third gave four. Just one included written comments, particularly praising the facility's staff and accommodations.[1] On Facebook, five more individuals each rated H.O.W.
