ABOUT KAISER PERMANENTE WEST COVINA BEHAVIORAL HEALTH OFFICES

Located 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, the Kaiser Permanente West Covina Behavioral Health Offices provides a range of outpatient treatment services for adults and adolescents struggling with substance abuse, mental health, or co-occurring disorders. Unlike many Kaiser Permanente facilities, which offer behavioral health treatment as an auxiliary service, the West Covina location specializes exclusively with psychiatry services and substance abuse treatment.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Before starting treatment, clinicians perform an initial psychiatric and/or substance abuse assessment with clients to develop a treatment plan. Drop-in services are available for individuals seeking treatment for substance abuse, and dually-diagnosed clients may be referred to the facility’s chemical dependency program.

Along with recommended 12-step involvement, Kaiser Permanente’s chemical dependency program schedules group counseling, skills training sessions, and educational classes. Family involvement is also recommended, and parents of adolescents are particularly encouraged to attend sessions on co-dependency and effective parent/child communication.

Along with crisis intervention, the West Covina location offers a range of mental health services, including one-on-one counseling, peer support groups, family counseling, educational sessions, and ongoing medication management. Although the facility does not offer pharmaceutical services on-site, clinicians may still recommend medication-assisted therapy or outpatient-based detoxification through Kaiser Permanente’s healthcare network.

To accommodate client schedules, the behavioral health offices provide both morning and evening schedules for group meetings. Appointments are required for individual counseling and initial assessments. The facility also offers a 24/7 help line if clients or loved ones need to speak with a behavioral health specialist.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Kaiser Permanente West Covina Behavioral Health Offices employ a team of psychiatrists, licensed substance abuse counselors, mental health professionals, family psychologists, and licensed social workers. The three alumni polled by Rehabs.com gave the staff's level of experience an average rating of four out of five stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing three alumni have responded to the Rehabs.com survey. Feedback collected by Rehabs.com indicates that alumni had mixed feelings regarding the quality of treatment. While some alumni provide high marks for counseling effectiveness, staff support, and the level of family involvement, others reported uncomfortable group sessions.

Alum Gerry told Rehabs.com: “Group facilitation was awkward and often times disrespectful and impatient with new clients.” Gerry’s ratings suggest that they were not comfortable during their stay. Gerry gave the facility two out of five stars for accommodations and exercise/leisure while giving a one out of five-star rating for meals and nutrition. He did however give the facility a four out of five-star rating for treatment effectiveness, connectivity, and family participation.

One survey respondent described the staff as “dedicated.” This former client gave the staff a four out of five star rating for treatment effectiveness, connectivity, family participation, counseling options, admin/discharge, and clean/maintained.
