ABOUT TEEN CHALLENGE MONTEREY โ PAJARO PROGRAMS

Teen Challenge is an international network of faith-based rehabilitation programs founded by the Reverend David Wilkerson in New York in 1958. The various facilities run long-term, residential Christian discipleship programs for individuals struggling with addiction to drugs and alcohol and other life-controlling problems. Teen Challenge Monterey Bay operates separate men's and women's programs as well as an emergency shelter; the Pajaro Men's Center offers treatment for men aged 18+.

The center accepts men who are court-ordered to treatment.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The program lasts a minimum of 13 months, and aims to help its participants to become "mentally sound, emotionally balanced, socially adjusted, physically well and spiritually alive." It's worth noting that Teen Challenge offers non-medical and usually non-clinical programs, in which recovery is approached through establishing a relationship with Jesus Christ and doing the deep work of addressing character as well as establishing abstinence. "Teen Challenge rests upon one reason for success: 'The Jesus Factor,'" the Pajaro Men's Center's website notes.

Days are structured around devotions, Bible study in classroom settings, chapel services, and work therapy, including landscaping at a local college, helping people move, helping with traffic control, and preparing firewood for sale. Beginning six months or more into the program depending on their progress, residents seek part-time employment or up to 20 hours a week of study; later, they may take a full-time job, or study full-time. By the final stage of treatment, residents must make plans for housing, employment, and a church to attend in their local community in order to graduate from the program.

All clients who didn't graduate from high school must complete their GED before they graduate the Teen Challenge program.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

As a non-medical organization, Teen Challenge does not employ medical staff, however, numerous staff members at the Pajaro Men's Center are themselves in recovery from addiction, offering first-hand experience of recovery. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility four out of five stars for its staff's level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The Pajaro Men's Center can accommodate more than 30 men at a time. Leisure amenities include a basketball hoop, a weight room, board games, and a ping pong table. Throughout treatment, residents may also participate in off-campus activities a few times a week; these include church visits and a Friday night Christian 12-step meeting, though for the most part the program is not based on the 12-Steps. There's also a weekly movie screening, and clients may attend picnics, pot lucks, and other social activities through the churches they attend. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility five stars for its cleanliness, meals, and exercise/leisure offerings, and four stars for its accommodations.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews directly from alumni of this facility, but secondary sites did yield some coverage, and it was mostly positive: a four-star average rating based on six reviews on Facebook, and on Google, two five-star ratings.[1] [2] "We all need the Lord keep up the good work.... Love you guys always," J.W. wrote on Google; "Great place," R.S. added on Google in the only other piece of commentary available at the time of this writing.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date would strongly recommend treatment at the Pajaro Men's Center. "Activities, keep them busy, making them work, teaching them, support," they wrote, giving the facility five stars in most of the evaluated treatment metrics, including its treatment effectiveness, family participation, and ability to treat co-occurring disorders. However, they cited the center's security as a weakness.

FINANCING

Teen Challenge Monterey Bay does not charge for participation in its programs, however, any income residents earn while staying at the facility is given back to the program. All residents are given a monthly allowance, and on completion, some students receive an award to go toward their first month's rent, car insurance, or some other aspect of their new life. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center's affordability gave it five out of five stars.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pages/Teen-Challenge-Monterey-Bay/153523211353147
[2] https://goo.gl/KXiKjs
