ABOUT CENTRAL VALLEY RECOVERY SERVICES, INC.

Headquartered in Visalia, Calif., Central Valley Recovery Services (CVRS) operates one intensive outpatient clinic, five residential programs, and four sober living facilities. The more than 45-year-old agency serves men and women struggling with substance abuse and prioritizes support for family reunification when possible. This is also amongst the state's 738 (51.6 percent) treatment facilities with specifically-tailored programming for individuals struggling with co-occurring mental health disorders. A limited number of non-medical detox beds are available, and all services are offered in Spanish and English.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Clients who need support through the withdrawal process can access inpatient detox services on a first-come first-served basis. After three to five days, they will be referred to a continuing treatment program within the agency. Individual counseling is sometimes used early in the recovery process to assess individual needs and craft a plan to address them. During this assessment period, treatment staff members also identify and help to coordinate client access to other related social services such as medical or employment services.

Treatment programming at CVRS is based on 12-step concepts and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). While co-occurring treatment runs a minimum of 90 days, all residential rehab options are long-term, ranging from 30 days up to six months, and all clients who have completed a full program are eligible for up to one year of aftercare. In California, CVRS is among the 33.6 percent of non-hospital facilities to provide long-term residential care.

Residents attend multiple process groups, educational sessions, and 12-step meetings throughout the week. All treatment programs include parenting courses and nutrition classes. Programs also offer some form of family support. Among the curricula applied are Living in Balance, which is designed to be accessible at any point in recovery; Wellness Action Recovery Plan (WRAP); and Integrated Combined Therapy, which provides a model for combining 12-Step with motivational interviewing and/or cognitive behavioral therapy approaches.

In addition, long-term residents volunteer together at local agencies such as Habitat for Humanity, the Children's Museum, and a food bank. The aftercare program also encourages volunteering.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

CVRS's treatment team include master's-level licensed therapists, certified alcohol and drug counselors, and peer specialists. The staff participates in continuing education and is trained to provide culturally appropriate services. Two facility's staff-to-client ratios are listed on the CVRS website: Mothering Heights maintains a ratio of 1:3 and New Hope offers a 1:5 ratio.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Pine Recovery, New Visions, New Hope, Mothering Heights, and Robertson Recovery all offer long-term residential treatment, with varying living arrangements. The website specifies semi-private rooms for some and home-like environments for all. All incorporate recreational and social activities. Personal cellphones are permitted in individually approved cases, depending on the stage of each client's treatment.

Mothering Heights supports women who are pregnant or living with one child aged up to two years, making it one of the state's 397 (27.8 percent) facilities with this offering.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

While Rehabs.com has not yet received any feedback from these facilities' alumni, secondary review websites featuring individual residences reveal overwhelmingly positive opinions. About 90 percent of 35 ratings for three locations, posted across five sites, were five stars out of five.

Written comments for all three facilities emphasized the challenging nature of treatment and need for clients to do the work required for success. "Recovery is for the person that wants to change on the inside, great place to change," Michael wrote in a representative review on a Facebook page for Pine Recovery, where five users all gave five-star ratings.[1] Three reviewers also posted about volunteering and continuing to participate as alumni.

Several alumni complimented the staff for their support and dedication, including three reviewers of New Vision on
its Facebook page, where 17 users produced a 4.6-star average rating.[2] It should be noted that CVRS may maintain its Facebook pages. Additional positive comments were posted about New Visions on Google where four users all provided perfect five-star ratings.[3]

However, two former clients on Facebook reported that the staff provided insufficient supervision, creating unstable environments, which was echoed by the sole Yelp reviewer who awarded just one out of five stars for New Visions.[4]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

One former client's mother agreed on Facebook with satisfied alumni reviews, writing, "I felt they did an excellent job," and noting that she attended family meetings at Pine Recovery.

WHAT STAFF SAY

The sole individual polled by Rehabs.com to date, a staff member, concurred with positive reviews, particularly emphasizing the strength of the program's ability to treat co-occurring addiction and mental health conditions. The staff member respected co-workers, awarding four stars out of five for the level of staff training and experience. They also represented the New Hope facility as clean and the opportunities for family participation as strong.

Despite noting "funding" as the single facility weakness, this reviewer still awarded five stars for the center's affordability and praised "Collabrative partnerships with county agencies" as a strength.

Mothering Heights received two employee reviews on Indeed. Both reviewers were volunteers who depicted their work at Mothering Heights as valuable and enjoyable. They shared respect for the organization and awarded perfect five-star ratings.[5]

FINANCING

According to the CVRS website, fees for treatment services are assessed on a sliding scale. Many clients are covered by county and state funding, and private insurance is also accepted.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pine-Recovery-Visalia-Ca/206423742716518
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pages/New-Visions-for-Women/146706695373897
[3] GoogleReviews
[4] https://www.yelp.com/biz/new-visions-for-women-visalia
[5] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Mothering-Heights/reviews?fcountry=US&floc=Visalia%2C+CA
