ABOUT THE BEACON HOUSE ASSOCIATION OF SAN PEDRO

Located in San Pedro, California, the Beacon House Association of San Pedro provides long-term residential treatment to adult men struggling with substance use disorder or co-occurring mental health and addiction disorders. The facility is one of 485 non-hospital substance abuse programs in California (about 34 percent of all facilities in the state) to offer residential programming that lasts longer that 30 days. Close to 50 percent of all residential facilities in the state offer programs specially tailored to men.

Detox services are not provided on-site, but the facility will help clients find a nearby facility for a safe and medically-monitored withdrawal program, if needed.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

With a focus on peer-to-peer and community support, the Beacon House provides a highly structured intervention process based on the 12 steps. Clients participate in individual and group counseling sessions combined with community service and work therapy programs. The facility does accept referrals from the community and facilities; applicants must apply for the program to be considered. Preliminary assessments are made over the phone.

Educational programs regarding a range of different issues that affect sobriety are provided, including addiction and substance abuse education, parenting, anger management, and community-focused classes. Recreational, vocational, and community focused work programs provide clients with a structured form of physical activity that supports healthy life skills. Sober living services are made available to program graduates as needed to effectively transition clients back into the community.

According to Beacon House's program schedule, daily activities include a morning exercise walk, a morning group, and community service, along with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings and recreation time. All clients are required to do chores and help manage the community and household.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team includes certified addiction treatment counselors and a registered addiction specialist. The one alum served by Rehabs.com to date gave Beacon House five out of five stars for its staff's support and its staff's level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Clients live in a restored two-story house built in 1890, which offers approximately 3,256 square feet of living and office space, and can accommodate 18 residents at a time.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com has received one review from an alum of the Beacon House Association of San Pedro. The 40 to 59-year-old male, who was named F.H. and reported staying at the facility for 90 days, gave Beacon House five out of five stars for its holistic offerings, its cleanliness, its overall quality of counseling, and the frequency and consistency of its meetings. "I had been to many programs in the past, Beacon House is by far the hardest program ever, it's not for everyone," he wrote. "If you complete it you will never need another.

Beacon House also fared well on secondary sites, where it earned average ratings of 4.9 out of five stars based on nine Google reviews[1] and five out of five stars based on 34 Facebook reviews[2] (which the facility has the ability to manage). Former clients across both sites described the program as life saving and the staff and caring and compassionate. "I have yet to come across a treatment center that offers the amount of care, support and treatment that the Beacon House offers," Joe told Google in a representative review. "This program is willing to put in the time and effort that allows men to achieve lasting sobriety.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The two loved ones surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility mixed reviews.

One anonymous parent of a former client was impressed with the program, and awarded the facility four or five out of five stars its counseling options, its exercise offerings, its pricing, and its cleanliness. Weaknesses, according to this parent, were the facility’s family involvement, which received just two stars, and its staff support, with earned only three stars.

The other anonymous reviewer, whose cousin attended the program, indicated that although the Beacon House had a “very friendly staff” and a “family like environment,” the “organization, professionalism, and quality were lacking.” They gave the facility only three out of five stars for its treatment effectiveness, its family participation, and its cleanliness, and just one star for its counseling options, its treatment of co-occurring disorders, and its staff’s level of training and experience.

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, no one is turned away for lack of funds. The nonprofit works on a sliding scale for fees and does not accept health insurance.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/beacon.house.167/reviews/?ref=page_internal
