ABOUT FATHER ALFRED CENTER SAINT ANTHONY FOUNDATION

San Francisco's Saint Anthony Foundation is a nonprofit founded in 1950 to support San Franciscans living in poverty. The agency provides meals, a medical clinic, clothing, and other services, including addiction treatment. The addiction program is a year-long residential recovery program for men struggling with homelessness, addiction, and often co-occurring mental health disorders. It is offered at the Father Alfred Center, located in the Tenderloin neighborhood. Detox is not available on-site.

The Father Alfred Center is one of the 52.3 percent of California facilities that offer some services dedicated to men, and one of just 33.6 percent that offer long-term residential treatment, lasting more than 30 days.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The Father Alfred Center's residential program uses a holistic approach to treatment, which aims not just to promote abstinence from drugs and alcohol, but also to help men build stable futures.

The year-long program is structured around work. For the first six months of treatment, residents volunteer in the Saint Anthony Foundation's dining room, helping to cook food and serve visitors while building self-esteem and work skills.

Meanwhile, they also train in the center's tech lab, where they take computer classes and receive life-skills training and counseling on how to search for a job β€” placing the Father Alfred Center among the 46.1 percent of California rehabs that offer employment training or counseling for clients.

Men are later employed outside the organization through community partnerships. By the time they leave the program, almost all men have stable employment and a place to live. Through the Saint Anthony Foundation's other offerings, clients can also access medical care, counseling, advocacy support, case management services, clothing, and justice education.

On successfully graduating the program, alumni join a network that often gets together with current residents, helping to provide an example of lasting sobriety for new residents and to keep older graduates active in their recovery.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The Saint Anthony Foundation employs social workers, among other skilled professionals. The single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center two out of five stars for its staff's level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings, however, the single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center three stars for its cleanliness and two stars for its exercise and leisure offerings.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

"Really a place for people with no other choice," was the appraisal of alum Matt, who added that although the work therapy was helpful for many clients, counselors seemed to be "in over their heads." Matt gave the center three stars for its counseling options, two stars for its ability to treat co-occurring disorders, and one star for its family participation, and indicated that he would not recommend the program.

The Father Anthony Center has just one review on secondary sites at present: a five-star rating with no accompanying commentary, left on Google.[1]

The Saint Anthony Foundation as a whole has mostly positive feedback on secondary sites, with a 4.8-star average rating based on the opinions of 157 people on Facebook (where the center can manage its own page) and a 4.3-star average rating based on 22 reviews on Google.[2] [3]

Aside from a few complaints from people who said they'd received rude treatment at the center's dining room, most of the reviews praised the center's dedication and the services they received: "Great people in manny avenues helping everyone who comes you are what matters!!!!! I know I have been there!! Thank you everyone," Rolando wrote in a representative comment.

FINANCING

There is currently no information regarding the cost of treatment on the center’s website, however, at least some of the cost of treatment is offset by donations. The single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center five out of five stars for its affordability.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/stanthonysf/reviews/?ref=page_internal
[3] GoogleReviews
