ABOUT DELANCEY STREET FOUNDATION – SAN FRANCISCO

The Delancey Street Foundation is a socially progressive sober living organization that offers ex-convicts, the homeless, and individuals struggling with substance use disorder a long-term place to live and work while they rebuild their lives. The San Francisco branch was the first location, founded more than 40 years ago. Further branches have followed in Los Angeles, New Mexico, New York, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Massachusetts.

Like 54.9 percent of rehabs in California, the San Francisco branch operates on a private, non-profit basis. It fills a huge complex in the city's South Beach neighborhood, which was primarily built by residents themselves and has won numerous architecture awards.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Unique to the facility, Delancey Street requires a very long-term commitment, with a minimum stay of two years and an average stay of four, and there are no staff: the community is run by the residents themselves. The goal is for residents to leave the center substance-free, with three marketable skills. There's no professional therapy: healing at Delancey Street is a practical affair, based on living, working, interacting with the community, and acquiring new life skills.

Specifically, clients start out by learning personal skills, such as personal hygiene, work habits, and how to improve interpersonal skills. Next, they enter a vocational school, where other, more advanced residents train them in a trade. Trades include accounting, transportation, upholstery, event planning, food services, retail, and advertising.

All of these trainings and jobs can be provided on-campus. There's an opportunity to obtain a GED, and more educational opportunities further into the program. Clients wishing to travel can opt to spend a semester at one of Delancey Street's other locations around the country.

Towards the end of their stay, residents secure work off the campus while still living at the center, until they've saved enough money to move into their own place.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to its website, Delancey Street has no staff (excluding its president and board of directors). Instead, the facility is entirely self-governed by residents. Residents educate other residents, interview new applicants, and regulate housing, rule violations, and more.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The San Francisco location’s 500 residents live and work in an award-winning, 370,000 square-foot complex that covers an entire city block along the waterfront, with retail space on the ground floor and living space above. All three of the individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center four- and five-star ratings for its accommodations and its cleanliness.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Both of the alumni polled by Rehabs.com noted that the program was effective. "Been clean since leaving," J.M. wrote, giving the center just two stars for its holistic offerings but five stars for the quality of its group counseling and its overall effectiveness. The other alum, Joe, would not recommend the center even though it's effective, stressing how tough it is. "This is no joke. If you want pillows and hugs, this is not your program," Joe wrote.

Delancey Street has overwhelmingly positive feedback on secondary sites, with a 4.7 out of five-star average rating based on 44 reviews on Facebook.[1] The reviewers repeatedly thanked Delancey Street for their long-term sobriety, which has often lasted many years, and noted that the center turned their lives around. "The place that helped me save my life...Change comes from within...Thank you," Joseph wrote in one of many glowing comments.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole family member surveyed by Rehabs.com to date would strongly recommend Delancey Street. "Excellent rehab programs with job training," the anonymous reviewer wrote, giving the center four stars for its ability to treat co-occurring disorders. However, they added that there was "very limited family contact allowed."

FINANCING

The nonprofit facility funds itself through the work carried out by residents, as well as donations from individuals and corporations. Residents pay no fees, although all resources earned through working are pooled. This places the center among the 48.5 percent of facilities in California that offer some treatment free of charge.

CONCLUSION

Many communities have considered opening similar self-regulated, work-therapy programs in their communities. According to an April 2018 article by the Times of San Diego, the city is now searching for property to open a similar residential facility.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pages/Delancey-Street-Foundation/152852691472369
