ABOUT VETERANS VILLAGE OF SAN DIEGO — VETERANS TREATMENT CENTER

Veterans Village of San Diego (VVSD) operates five facilities in San Diego County. Located near San Diego International Airport, Veterans Treatment Center (VTC) offers residential care for homeless veterans battling addiction and emotional trauma. Clients must be a veteran from any branch of service, verified as homeless, and have significant substance use issues to be admitted to VTC, which is among 23.2 percent of treatment centers in California that provide specially tailored programs for veterans .

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

VTC uses a social model of treatment, which lasts up to one year. The program provides treatment and support for substance abuse, behavioral health and wellness, and employment through the 12-step model of recovery, case management, and individual, group, couples, and family therapy. There are dedicated tracks for individuals who received hostile or friendly fire while serving in a war zone, struggle with co-occurring disorders, and have chronic relapses.

The program has four phases: assessment and treatment (30 to 45 days), recovery and treatment (90+ days), employment development, and community reintegration. By the end, clients are expected to work full-time, attend meetings, coordinate with a sponsor, undergo therapy as needed, maintain an active bank account, and seek permanent housing.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The staff-to-client ratio is 1:12, and the senior management team includes many veterans. The two individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave a four star and perfect five-star rating for the staff’s level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

At first, residents sleep on bunk beds in a military-style “squad bay”. They then move to rooms occupied by two or three others. All are expected to participate in chores and house meetings.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

B.L, the one former client polled by Rehabs.com to date, submitted high ratings for most evaluated metrics, including perfect five-star ratings for the level of family participation, its affordability, and the likelihood they'd recommend the facility. They also offered four stars for the facility's counseling options and its overall cleanliness. In a glowing review, B.L. wrote: “I've been sober six months and I worked the steps and I didn't think I would survive or live as happy as I am today.”

On secondary review sites to date, VVSD received positive overall reviews. On Google reviews, 87 individuals gave the treatment provider an average rating of 4.5 out of five stars, while 43 individuals offered an average rating of 4.7 out of five stars on Facebook, which the facility may be able to manage. [1][2]

Although feedback applied to the entire organization rather than VTC alone, reviewers (alumni, loved ones, others) appreciated the programs, often referred to as life-saving, such as Brett on Google: “Thank you VVSD for saving another life. Drugs and Alcohol are not the answer.” Many considered staff caring, although isolated complaints deemed them unprofessional.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date, N.L. also gave favorable feedback for VTC, offering five-star ratings for the level of facility participation and the likelihood they'd recommend the facility to others. “The experience at VVSD has taught my daughter to live sober and become responsible and self-confident… VVSD has saved her life,” N.L. wrote. They also offered four-star ratings for the facility's ability to treat co-occurring disorders.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Employees offered mainly favorable feedback for VVSD, as a whole, on secondary review sites. Nineteen individuals gave the organization 4.5 out of five stars on Indeed, and eight reviewers gave VVSD an average rating of 3.7 out of five stars on Glassdoor. [3] [4] Although many staff members found their jobs rewarding and inspiring at a “good” and “great” place, others criticized high workload and low pay.

FINANCING

There currently is no information on the facility's website regarding costs; however both reviewers polled by Rehabs.com to date gave five-star ratings for the facility's affordability.

[1] https://goo.gl/136fOS

[2] https://facebook.com/pg/VVSD.Veterans/reviews/?ref=page_internal

[3] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Veterans-Village-of-SAN-Diego/reviews

[4] https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Veterans-Village-of-San-Diego-Reviews-E508270.htm
