ABOUT UCSANDIEGO MEDICAL CENTER - CO-OCCURRING DISORDERS PROGRAM

The UCSanDiego (UCSD) Health System offers a full range of medical care and operates a Co-Occurring Disorders (COD) Program at its main location. Located in San Diego, Calif. and run by the University of California, the outpatient program is designed for clients seeking treatment for both substance abuse and mental health disorders.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The treatment process at UCSD begins with a comprehensive assessment to develop an individualized treatment plan, which typically includes services for family and significant others.
Substance abuse treatment focuses on a wide range of addictive substances including nicotine, alcohol, cannabis, meth, and heroin.

To treat these addictions, the facility uses a combination of counseling, education, and medication-assisted therapy (MAT) as necessary. The facility uses MAT to treat opioid addiction utilizing Suboxone to minimize the discomfort of withdrawal and curb cravings. In California, 25.2 percent of facilities administer Suboxone.

Treatment focuses on helping to create a stable home situation, stabilize psychiatric symptoms, help clients maintain sobriety, and strengthen bonds with family and the community. To promote stabilization, medication management may also be incorporated into programming. Family participation is encouraged, and clients are encouraged to practice mindfulness in their daily lives.

Other goals include developing interpersonal, behavioral, and emotional regulation skills, as well as strengthening vocational goals and community connections. These connections include attending support groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Dual Recovery Anonymous, and SMART Recovery, which meet on-site.

The treatment center offers recovery counseling, relapse prevention, and individual and group therapy. Education about addiction and mental health is also a prominent component of the treatment process. The facility can also provide referrals to community services for help with health, finances, housing, and employment.

Individuals also have the option to participate in research studies. The facility manages studies focused on attachment, dissociation, cognitive factors, ADHD, childhood maltreatment, symptoms of post-traumatic stress, and personality variables.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team at USCD includes psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, as well as mental health professionals in-training who assist with the research aspect of the program.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Of the three alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing, two left negative feedback, and one provided a positive review. The one former client polled extensively gave five out of five stars for the cleanliness of the facility, family participation, affordability, the staff’s level of training and experience, as well as their ability to treat co-occurring disorders. She also gave four stars for treatment effectiveness. "It was very meaningful and helped me with my recovery," she wrote.

The other two alumni indicated they were not satisfied with their treatment experience at USCD's program. One alum wrote how they "didn't receive one on one care," adding: "The counseling was worthless. They are overall good, just not for my needs." The other anonymous reviewer wrote how they werre “troubled by thoughts of other people in need of help having to go through what I experienced…”

FINANCING

USCD accepts a range of payment options, although the accepted options may differ based on the specialization. Along with private insurance, the facility is one of the 34% of U.S. facilities that accepts Medicare and 46 percent of facilities to accept s tate-financed health insurance (Medi-Cal).

CONCLUSION

UCSD uses various methods to both help educate clients about treatment options, as well as to provide educational materials about a wide range of health conditions and disorders. On the organization’s Facebook page, clients can find a post about different conditions that are often hard to treat since clients do not seek help early. The posts also focus on changes in the medical community that affect clients’ care.
