ABOUT HEARTLAND HOUSE

Founded in 1960 by The Twelfth Step House of San Diego, Heartland House provides one of the state's 324 (24.7 percent) residential treatment and transitional living support facilities. This is one of the just 686 (52.3 percent) male-only treatment facilities in the state for men seeking abstinence from drugs and alcohol. Located in Redwood Village, a residential neighborhood only seven miles from downtown San Diego, the nonprofit organization serves 28 men through two separate facilities - a 20-bed residential recovery home and an 8-bed sober living unit across the street.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Prospective clients must be sober for at least 72 hours prior to admission. For the first week or more following their enrollment, men focus on acclimating to their new living environment: they’ll refrain from pursuing outside interests, including school and employment, but immerse themselves instead in classes, process groups, and introductory 12-Step meetings in the local community.

Following orientation, men progress to the next part of the program, where they’ll focus on physical and emotional recovery. Treatment encourages goal-setting and the creation of a foundation for long-term sobriety. Throughout their time in treatment, ranging from three to 12 months based on progress, men are provided with individual, family, and group counseling, as well as education on addiction, relapse prevention, and recreational activity. Case management and referrals for psychiatric and medical care are also provided as needed.

All Heartland House alumni are welcome to attend one of the organization’s four on-site 12-step meetings as well as its weekly continuing care group each Thursday at 6 p.m.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to its website, Heartland House employs a staff of certified addiction counselors, a master’s level marriage and family therapist (MFT), an executive chef, and weekend and night support staff.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Heartland House can accommodate up to 28 men at a time between its recovery home and sober living unit. Men are held accountable for maintaining their living space and for completing assigned daily chores. They’re required to attend weekly house meetings, and are highly encouraged to join the center’s peer council board, the committee responsible for making recommendations to staff.

In addition, the two alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com each gave Heartland House five-star ratings for its accommodations and meals.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Both alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com to date had positive things to share on their personal experiences here. They gave four- and five-star ratings when surveyed if they’d the recommend the program to others. When questioned about the program’s strengths, one noted “productivity,” and awarded five stars to holistic offerings, counseling options, and how worth the cost the treatment was.

As far as facility strengths, the other alum, I.J.S., highlighted everything from the program counselors to the quality meals. “The staff was approachable… Excellent meals and education… It was clean and again the staff was great,” this former client reported to Rehabs.com. The lowest rating of one star out of five, however, was given to extracurricular opportunities and level of family inclusion.

Feedback was mostly positive from ten Google users as well, where the center earned an average rating of four stars as of this writing.[1] Many written comments praised the program, though the sole negative commentary came from an alum who did not feel welcome to return to group sessions.

The single Yelp reviewer to date provided five out of five stars, and credited the facility with saving his life.[2]

FINANCING

Heartland House is funded in part by the county of San Diego, as well as city and state agencies. Treatment is not free, as the organization views financial responsibility as an integral part of sobriety; however, all program fees are based on a sliding scale.

CONCLUSION

Heartland House boasts widespread success amongst its clients, showcasing that 77.6 percent of its surveyed graduates were employed, and 99 percent had stayed away from criminal activity. In addition, Heartland House holds yearly galas and various open-house events, to stay in touch with former clients and present itself to new ones.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.yelp.com/biz/heartland-house-san-diego
