ABOUT DOOR TO HOPE

Located in Salinas, Calif., about 60 miles south of San Jose, Door to Hope is a nonprofit treatment organization dedicated to providing long-term residential care across three separate programs. The CARF-accredited nonprofit specializes in serving adult women, mothers with children, and teenage girls struggling with substance use as well as adult men and women with co-occurring disorders.

To better serve its community, Door to Hope runs programs in both English and Spanish. It is one of 603 facilities in California with a counselor fluent in Spanish

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

To determine a client’s needs and identify any co-occurring mental health issues, the treatment process begins with an initial psychosocial assessment. When and where supervision and structure are required to establish a sober lifestyle, clients may be referred to one of the nonprofit’s three residential tracks. Residential programs typically lasts between three and six months and are based upon evidence-based approaches, like motivational interviewing (MI) and the Matrix Model, and principles of the 12 Steps.

While in residential treatment, clients usually take part in a combination of individual and group counseling as well as educational sessions that cover topics related to addiction and relapse prevention. Door to Hope also runs a Seeking Safety program for those clients seeking to address any past trauma. Individualized programs may include counseling sessions on stress and anger management, grief and loss, domestic violence, and self-esteem.

In addition to core program components, the Santa Lucia residential program teaches teenage girls aged 12 to 18 the importance of key life skills such as discipline and self-care. Customized academics are also integrated here. In Nueva Esperanza, pregnant women and mothers and their young ones receive on-site child care and childhood development services. Parenting classes and educational seminars on pre- or postnatal may also be part of the curriculum.

Door to Hope’s outpatient program follows the same treatment approach as the residential programs, involving 12-step, counseling sessions, and education. Outpatient programs also incorporate elements of the Matrix Model and Seeking Safety program to help individuals affected by trauma. While outpatient programs are designed for adults, Door to Hope does offer an Integrated Co-occurring Treatment (ICT) program for teens, consisting of between 12 and 24 weeks of at-home counseling and educational sessions.

Door to Hope also offers focuses on treating infants impacted by substance abuse and trauma-related issues through its MCSTART program. After an initial assessment used to identify any physical and cognitive issues that may be the result of prenatal trauma and exposure, staff and parents work together in developing a comprehensive treatment strategy to ensure a more appropriate developmental healthy future for their child. Infants are usually referred here by other care providers that have knowledge of the client’s developmental history.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Door to Hope employs a multidisciplinary team to facilitate the recovery process. While the medical team is comprised of physicians, licensed substance counselors, and psychologists, clinical staff includes educators and counselors, clinical therapists, and case managers with extensive experience in addressing client concerns and facilitating treatment. Many staff members also have firsthand experience in recovery.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The Door, the adult women’s residential program, can accommodate as many as 14 women at a time. Residents share well-furnished bedrooms in a Tudor-styled, home-like facility that also boasts spacious communal areas, outdoor patios, and fully equipped kitchens.

The Nueva Esperanza program for mothers and pregnant women can house up to six women and up to 10 children.
