ABOUT EATING RECOVERY CENTER OF CALIFORNIA - SACRAMENTO

Set on a private, landscaped campus along the American River, the Eating Recovery Center of Sacramento, Calif. specializes in medically supervised treatment for adults and teens struggling with eating disorders and co-occurring substance use disorders (SUD).

Established in 2000, the Joint Commission-accredited program is one of just 242 (18.5 percent) centers in the state of California that offers partial hospitalization (PHP) care and one of 517 (39.4 percent) that offers intensive outpatient (IOP) care. The center also provides supportive housing for adults as well as for teens and their families.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The admissions process at the Eating Recovery Center begins with a thorough medical assessment which serves as the basis for an individualized treatment plan. Among the many disorders treated here are anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, compulsive overeating, and mood and anxiety disorders.

To address these disorders as well as related conditions of trauma, substance use, and exercise compulsion, the established program makes use of evidence-based therapies such as dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Experiential activities - including dance, art, and cooking - are also scheduled regularly throughout the week.

The PHP for adults typically consists of a six-hour treatment day, seven days a week. Programming may include psychiatric monitoring, medical support, and family therapy, placing emphasis on the development of healthy eating and long-term recovery skills (e.g. distress tolerance and anger management).

Offering as many as 11 hours of treatment each day, the PHP for teens is rooted in the family-based Maudsley approach to recovery. Here, loved ones are encouraged to take an active part in the recovery process and work with dieticians to address specific dietary needs. Teens can also keep up with their formal education throughout treatment.

Participants of IOP typically meet three days a week for nine or more treatment hours. The IOP can be used as a step-down service from a higher level of care, though many clients are admitted directly.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Eating Recovery Center employs a multidisciplinary team of master’s level clinical directors who are licensed social workers, psychologists, and family and marriage therapists. A nutrition manager is also on staff.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Clients enrolled at the housing program live in modern, gated apartment complexes within walking distance of the facility. The home for adults has shared rooms, full kitchens, airy outdoor patios, and cozy living rooms with fireplaces. Teens reside with their families in fully furnished one- or two-bedroom apartments.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

In the sole Rehabs.com survey response to date, an anonymous alum awarded the Eating Recovery Center of Sacramento five out of five stars for its treatment, extracurricular and alternative activities, and for the staff’s support, flexibility, and availability. The anonymous alum also highlighted the components to their three-tiered aftercare plan: therapy, a psychiatrist, and a dietician.

On Google, where the center has an average rating of 2.1 out of five stars based on eight reviews to date, feedback was more mixed. Reviewer Valerie reported a “Wonderful, caring staff,” while alum Cynthia agreed but felt the center was ill-equipped to deal with co-existing conditions. “There was also a lot of cliquishness among the patients when we were first there and our feelings of being shunned were not taken seriously either,” she added. Grateful alum Whitney, much in contrast, referred to the center as “an absolute blessing” in her five-star review.[1]

Feedback was also mixed on Yelp, where five individuals shared an above-average rating of 3.2 out of five stars to date. Some reviewers described staff as caring while others were unimpressed with therapists they found “not up to par.”[2]

WHAT STAFF SAY

On Glassdoor, the center has a weak average rating of one out of five stars from five former employees. Complaints included high staff turnover, poor communication, and claims that the center focuses more of its efforts on marketing than actual treatment services.[3]

FINANCING

According to its website, Eating Recovery Center is in-network with most private insurance plans, making it one of just 734 (56.0 percent) facilities in the state of California to accept private health insurance.

The center also partners with American HealthCare Lending to facilitate financing options for patients and families without healthcare (or those with healthcare but no coverage for eating disorders treatment). Public insurances, like Medicaid, are accepted on a case-by-case basis.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.yelp.com/biz/eating-recovery-center-california-sacramento-sacramento-2
[3] https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Eating-Recovery-Center-Sacramento-Reviews-EIIE660493.0,22IL.23,33_IM747.htm
