The Reasons Eating Disorder Center offers acute inpatient, residential, and partial hospitalization (PHP) tracks. The hospital is amongst the just 28 (2.1 percent) that offers detox services in California as well.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the hospital’s website, treatment begins with a free psychosocial assessment, which is used to develop an individualized plan of care. Three Rehabs.com survey respondents reported that the length of stay was between 30 to 60 days.

Treatment for chemical dependency follows a 12-step model. Program participants attend structured days of individual and group counseling sessions, recreational therapy, and family therapy. On-site outpatient treatment is available to all alumni, and program graduates receive a comprehensive aftercare plan, which may include 12-step contacts in their neighborhood.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

As a hospital, BHC Alhambra employs physicians, though no further information about staff credentials is available. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com on the level of staff support to date provided four out of five stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

An online tour of the facility shows pictures of an outdoor pool, a basketball court, and an outdoor dining area. Residents have access to a shared room, and vegetarian requests can be accommodated.

The facility does not publish photographs of rooms, but multiple Rehabs.com survey respondents remarked that sleeping arrangements could be improved.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has yet to receive any reviews from alumni of the chemical dependency program, but three alumni of Reasons, the eating disorder program, each gave overall ratings of four stars or more.

One former client noted that she did not complete treatment, because "Insurance allowed only so man days." She referred to the food at the facility “just ok,” but, as they were in recovery for an eating disorder, added that “food never seemed tasty to me especially in the beginning.”

“Reasons was a strong program with lots of different therapy approaches,” another anonymous alum reported to Rehabs.com. “We also got to do yoga, which was relaxing. I didn't like the hospital in which we slept, but the building in which we spent our days was nice.”

The third former client gave high ratings across the board, including four stars for counseling options and treatment of co-occurring disorders, and five stars for holistic offerings and level of family participation.

External reviews from former clients of the psychiatric programs are, on average, far less positive. As of this writing, 53 Yelp reviewers gave the hospital an average rating of just two out of five stars, many mentioning rude staff and uncomfortable accommodations.[1] Brooke, for instance, wrote, “I asked a Mental health Worker to give me a plate of food, to which he responded by getting a tray, kneeling down in front of me, and motioning at me to "come to him" like a dog, all the while saying "Come here, Brookieeee! Come get your food, girl ". Absolutely disgusting behavior."

The facility earned a slightly higher average rating of three stars based on 72 Google reviews to date.[2] Many of these reviewers commented upon unfair policies and treatment approaches that did not properly address their individual needs. Additionally, C.D. wrote in a representative comment, they"hold onto clients as long as possible to bill the most possible."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The mother of a former client of the eating disorder program gave the treatment programming a solid four-star rating overall in her Rehabs.com survey, though she lamented that her daughter had trouble getting medication - a complaint other alumni mentioned - and that the food was unhealthy.

In her lengthy report to Yelp, another mother named Nicole expressed concerns about the hospital’s accommodations and some communication breakdowns that occurred while she tried getting in touch with a doctor during family visitation.[1] “I was never allowed to see my child's room, so I was never comfortable with where she was sleeping,” she also reported. Several other loved ones expressed concerns with discharge procedures and the lack of accessibility to their family members in treatment.

FINANCING

According to its website, the organization will “make attempts to work with your financial situation.” BHC Alhambra Hospital is in-network with most insurance companies, and offers options for cash payment with flexible scheduling.

CONCLUSION

In a 2013 article about “patient dumping”, Southern California Public Radio reported that BHC Alhambra seemed to have sent a homeless male client to a rescue mission where he was not expected, raising suspicions that he was simply offloaded from the facility. According to the report, local missions are working with hospitals to create approved protocols for referrals.

[1] https://www.yelp.com/biz/bhc-alhambra-hospital-rosemead-3
[2] GoogleReviews
