<p><strong>ABOUT CONTRA COSTA HEALTH SERVICES - ALCOHOL & OTHER DRUGS SERVICES</strong></p> <p>The Contra Costa County government's behavioral health division offers culturally competent treatment through its Alcohol & Other Drugs Services (AODS). It's <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/CA16.pdf" target="_blank">one of just seven California substance abuse treatment facilities run by the state</a>, which make up less than one percent of all treatment facilities in the California.</p> <p>Programming provided at dozens of facilities operated or contracted by the county includes <strong>residential rehabilitation, outpatient counseling</strong>, <a href="https://www.recovery.org/topics/medication-assisted-treatment/" target="_blank">medication assisted therapy (MAT)</a>, and several options for specialized populations such as youth, women, homeless, and individuals involved in the court systems. All services are available in English and Spanish. </p> <p><strong>TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT</strong></p> <p>Three county facilities, in Concord, Pittsburgh, and Richmond, offer <strong>non-medical withdrawal management (detox),</strong> along with counseling, education, and referrals to continued treatment after a typical five-day stay.</p> <p>Clients participating in outpatient treatment, available in several regional facilities, follow <strong>individualized treatment plans</strong> which include one-on-one, group, and <a href="https://www.recovery.org/pro/articles/the-pain-of-addiction-in-the-family-how-counseling-can-help/" target="_blank">family counseling</a>, along with educational sessions on topics such as <a href="https://www.recovery.org/pro/articles/sad-lets-talk-about-seasonal-affective-disorder-and-relapse/" target="_blank">relapse prevention</a>, AIDS, and STDs. The county's AODS also <strong>recommends participation in a <a href="https://www.recovery.org/pro/articles/how-a-non-religious-journalist-makes-a-case-for-aa-in-2017/" target="_blank">12-step</a> support group</strong> such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Secular Organizations for Sobriety.</p> <p>Residential rehabs - eight for adults and one for adolescents - provide the same treatment and education as outpatient programs, and <strong>employment assistance</strong>. The residential facilities apply a <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4220294/" target="_blank">social model of recovery</a>, which prioritizes peer support.</p> <p>Outpatient and residential services targeted toward women, and in particular those who are <strong>pregnant or mothers with young children</strong>, address gender-specific needs, trauma, and whole-person wellness. </p> <p>The county's <a href="https://www.recovery.org/pro/articles/why-are-opiate-addicts-so-hard-to-treat/" target="_blank">opioid dependency</a> programming is through Bay Area Addiction Research and Treatment (BAART) facilities, which provide <strong>methadone detox and maintenance</strong> in conjunction with counseling. AODS is <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/CA16.pdf" target="_blank">one of 147 substance abuse treatment facilities in California</a> to offer an opioid treatment program, which make up just 11 percent of all facilities in the state.</p> <p>State and federal court systems collaborate with AODS on Drug Court treatment and diversion programs.</p> <p><strong>STAFF CREDENTIALS</strong></p> <p>The county's website notes that treatment team members meet state and other relevant requirements, including drug counseling certification. Various program groups are listed as having staff-to-client ratios of one-to- between two and 12.</p> <p><strong>ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES</strong></p> <p>Contra Costa County's substance abuse treatment facilities include one youth, four men's, and four women's residential rehabs, in addition to two methadone clinics, three non-medical detox centers, and seven outpatient clinics. Residential programs are located in Antioch, Clayton, Martinez, Concord, Pittsburg, San Pablo, and Oakland. There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings, however; the one alum surveyed by Rehabs.com to date gave AODS five out of five stars for its accommodations and amenities. </p> <p><strong>WHAT ALUMNI SAY</strong></p> <p>At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com has received mostly positive feedback from one former client of AODS. The alum, a female over the age of 60, noted that she would highly recommend the unspecified program she participated in. She also gave the facility five out of five stars for its treatment of <a href="http://www.recovery.org/topics/dual-diagnosis-recovery/" target="_blank">co-occurring disorders</a>, its family participation, it's staff's level of training and experience, and its cleanliness. She complimented doctors and staff, but indicated that there were minimal options for activity and approaches to counseling.</p> <p>Several AODS facilities had Google reviews, with ratings ranging from one to five out of five stars. Together, they did not reveal clear trends across the programs. </p> <p>One women's residential facility, Discovery House, received a four-star rating and a five-star rating, with no written comments.<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-1"><sup>[1]</sup></a></small>In addition, the county's general behavioral health division received one one-star review, however its accompanying comment said, "good." <small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-2"><sup>[2]</sup></a></small> </p> <p>On Google, the Richmond methadone clinic received an average rating of 3.6 out of five stars based on 14 reviews<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-3"><sup>[3]</sup></a></small>. The majority of respondents (10) praised the facility for its effective services and its caring and experienced staff, while the four negative reviewers complained about slow service and unfair charges.</p> <p><strong>FINANCING</strong></p> <p>According to the county's website, prevention programs are free and a <strong>sliding fee scale</strong> is available for many other services.
