Editorial Review

ABOUT WATTS HEALTHCARE CORPORATION - HOUSE OF UHURU

A division of Watts Healthcare Corporation (WHCC), a nonprofit health services agency, House of Uhuru is a 66-bed residential substance abuse treatment program for adult men and women in Southern Los Angeles. Offering outpatient services as well, the state-licensed House of Uhuru is one of 699 (53.3 percent) of nonprofit facilities in the state of California and one of just 490 (37.4 percent) to offer non-hospital, residential services.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Although WHCC’s House of Uhuru does not provide information on certain details of programming, such as length of stay and other matters of logistical nature, all clients can expect a comprehensive curriculum that may typically involves some combination of the following: individual counseling and group therapy, education on drugs and alcohol as well as on health and nutrition, classes covering life skills, parenting, and anger management, and vocational and educational resources and support.

These services are available on an outpatient basis as well as in a residential setting for men, women, and women with children under the age of six. Where necessary, House of Uhuru offers court advocacy and HIV/AIDS prevention and intervention services. It is among the 33 percent of California facilities to provide HIV testing. Treatment is provided in a culturally sensitive manner, per the center’s website.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

House of Uhuru is staffed by a team of certified addictions counselors, each of whom work alongside clients from day one in setting and reaching their goals.

The two individuals surveyed by Rehabs.com on the matter both gave House of Uhuru three out of five stars for the staff’s level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

House of Uhuru can accommodate as many as 66 adult men and women at a time. Women with young children (birth through age five) reside with their children in a separate housing area.

The three individuals surveyed by Rehabs.com to date provided mixed feedback on the matter: two loved ones gave the center four stars for its accommodations and three and five stars for its meals, however, Kirsten, an alum, gave only one or two stars in these categories, telling Rehabs.com that the facility “was in an unsafe area” and that it was “infested with insects.”

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Kirsten, the sole alum surveyed by Rehabs.com to date, was mostly disappointed with the treatment she received. “There was little to no one on one sessions with counselors and no detox offered,” she wrote. “I did not get what I needed from this treatment center, however, there was structure, but also disorganized.”

In addition, while the House of Uhuru has a distinctively above-average rating of 3.8 out of five stars from 11 Google reviewers to date, written commentary provided was more mixed. Some described the staff as lazy, unprofessional. Others, however, found that staff were both helpful and knowledgeable about addiction, homelessness, and alternative sentencing. “If you're serious about getting clean, this is the place,” wrote alum J.B. “ONLY IF YOU'RE SERIOUS. This place saved my life.”[1]

The center also has a near-perfect average rating of 4.6 out of five stars from seven Facebook users as of this writing, however, commentary was limited.[2]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The pair of loved ones surveyed by Rehabs.com both told of positive treatment experiences had by their family member. Both reviewers gave at least four-out of five-star ratings for several areas including treatment effectiveness, family participation, counseling options, and treatment for co-occurring disorders. While one applauded the center for helping clients discover an inner strength that they were once unaware of, S.C. likened the facility to a “village raising a child.”

FINANCING

According to its website, House of Uhuru is certified as a Drug Medi-Cal Substance Use Disorder Treatment Facility by the state of California. The center also makes use of a sliding fee scale for its residential and outpatient treatment services.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-House-of-Uhuru/167021333308569
