Editorial Review

ABOUT KAISER PERMANENTE LOS ANGELES MEDICAL CENTER

Located on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center provides outpatient treatment services for adults, adolescents, and families struggling with chemical dependency, co-occurring disorders, and mental health issues. If necessary, outpatient-based detoxification and medication-assisted therapy are also available.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Kaiser Permanente offers a number of online services, and clients are encouraged to take an online self-assessment before seeking an in-person evaluation. Walk-in services are welcomed at this location on weekdays, and the facility offers a 24/7 helpline for behavioral health clients. With an on-site pharmacy, the Medical Center may prescribe medications to alleviate withdrawal symptoms during detoxification. These medications may include Suboxone for opioid addiction or Vivitrol for alcohol cravings.

Along with medication-assisted therapy, Kaiser Permanente’s chemical dependency treatment program includes group counseling sessions and psychoeducational classes. These classes cover topics such as dual-diagnosis, relapse prevention, and addiction in families. In addition, loved ones are encouraged to attend family education classes, which address issues of co-dependency and parent/child communication. While undergoing core treatment at the facility, clients are strongly encouraged to participate in a 12-step program within the community.

Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center also provides outpatient-based psychiatric services, which include one-on-one therapy, specialized group counseling sessions, and medication management.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Kaiser Permanente Medical Center’s behavioral health program employs a qualified team of psychiatrists, licensed addiction counselors, family therapists, and mental health counselors.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com received survey data from one alum at the time of this writing. While describing the staff as “friendly,” the anonymous alum cited a “lack of resources” as a weakness, commenting: “Don’t go here.” The alum also reported a lack of counseling options and questioned the program’s ability to treat dual diagnosed clients. This person gave a rating of two out of five stars for all 15 survey metrics.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Rehabs.com received survey data from two respondents who are either friends or family of clients. Friends and family rated family involvement, counseling options, and the staff's level of experience and training highly, but held mixed opinions overall. One anonymous loved one told Rehabs.com: “Flexible but you wait too long. It's great to have the facility.” This individual gave strong five-star ratings for exercise/leisure, connectivity, family participation, affordability, counseling options, and treatment of co-occurring disorders. They also gave a one- out of five-star rating for accommodations, a two out of five star rating for treatment effectiveness as well as meals and nutrition, and gave a four out of five star rating for admin/discharge, experience (of staff), and value.

The other respondent, who gave four out of five stars for accommodations, said: “Focus on family healing. Family therapy should remain the primary focus.” This person gave a three out of five stars for every category except accommodations which received a four out of five star rating. This person also declined to rate treatment effectiveness and meals and nutrition.

FINANCING

Kaiser Permanente is designed to offer affordable treatment through its own healthcare plans. Determined by the client’s income, these plans may be subsidized through the Affordable Care Act, and clients could also qualify for additional financial assistance. Kaiser Permanente of Fresno also accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and Medi-Cal.
