Editorial Review

ABOUT REFLECTIONS RECOVERY CENTER — COSTA MESA, CA

Reflections Recovery Center offers detox and outpatient treatment, plus optional sober living facilities for adult men and women who are struggling with substance use disorder. The facility has numerous sober homes in Southern California; this campus near the John Wayne Airport in Costa Mesa is the organization’s treatment hub.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The main offering at Reflections is an intensive outpatient program (IOP) — positioning the organization among the 39.4 percent of California rehabs that offers IOPs. The IOP meets for six hours per week on weekday mornings, afternoons, or evenings, to suit a variety of schedules.

Treatment is based on the 12-Steps, supplemented by evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing (MI). Most treatment takes place in group settings, though clients also meet with their case manager individually once a week, and clients' families are invited to participate in an intensive, three-day family workshop.

When necessary, Reflections also provides medication assessments and medication management services. Clients learn life skills and techniques for preventing relapse and managing anger, and they can also participate in yoga and relaxation training focused on breathing, to promote holistic healing of the mind, body, and soul.

Reflections also provides a monitoring service — a sober professional who'll meet with the client and their family weekly, to check in on their progress.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The team includes registered addiction specialists and case managers, many of whom are themselves in long-term recovery. The facility’s website also refers to a psychiatrist who assists with withdrawal and medications, though these services appear to be provided on a contract basis. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date, a former staffer, gave the facility one star for the experience level of its mental health and addiction staff.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The sober living homes at Reflections are gender-specific and staffed by house managers to ensure all house rules are followed — including, of course, abstinence from drugs and alcohol. In addition, random drug tests are administered on a regular basis. Pictures published on the facility’s website show simple, comfortable, family-style homes with gardens and shared bedrooms; at least one home also has an outdoor pool.

In addition to operating its own sober living facility, Reflections Recovery Center contracts with other approved local sober-living centers.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com hasn't yet polled any alumni of Reflections Recovery Center, but the organization has mostly negative reviews on secondary sites, with a 2.5 out of five-star average rating based on six reviews on Google, and on Yelp, a single one-star rating.[1] [2]

"I have a few friends who have gone through Reflections and are both still sober," Daniel wrote in the only positive comment. But three other reviewers consistently complained of inadequate treatment, a sense that the facility was only interested in claiming insurance money, and poor living conditions. "Place is a joke. Turnover is very often & clients aren't given the attention they need or deserve. It is all about money & not the sick or suffering," Mark wrote in a typical comment on Yelp. One reviewer noted that conditions at Reflections seemed to have deteriorated after a change of management.

WHAT STAFF SAY

The single review submitted to Rehabs.com to date came from a former staffer, who indicated that they had concerns about the quality of care offered at Reflections Recovery Center’s Costa Mesa facility. “This company started recently and is simply seeking to make money off the well established FREE offerings of AA and NA and the massive sober community in the area,” the reviewer told Rehabs.com, additionally citing poor management and legal violations that compromised clients’ safety. They gave the facility just one star in most of the evaluated treatment metrics, including its honesty and the overall quality of its care.

Staff posting on secondary sites gave mixed feedback: the center has a one-star rating and two three-star ratings on Indeed.[3] All three reviewers echoed an alum who posted on Yelp to say the company had gone downhill since a recent change in management. "Previously Wonderful Company Acquired by Poor Management," one former case manager wrote, complaining of poor treatment of staff leading to high staff turnover, which could negatively impact client care.

FINANCING

Reflections doesn't currently publish its fees, but it's among the 56 percent of California-based facilities that accept private insurance. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date, a former staffer, gave the center three out of five stars for the fairness of its price point.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.yelp.com/biz/reflections-recovery-center-costa-mesa?osq=Reflections+Recovery+Center
[3] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Reflections-Recovery-Center/reviews?fcountry=US&floc=Fountain+Valley%2C+CA
