ABOUT THE MISSION AT KERN COUNTY (BAKERSFIELD RESCUE MISSION)

The Mission at Kern County is a Christian mission that offers services for homeless individuals working to treat addiction in the city of Bakersfield, Calif. Founded in 1952, this long-term residential treatment program for men and women struggling with addiction provides meals, education, and clothing for men and women. One of the 540 (about 38 percent) of residential facilities operating in California, The Mission at Kern County also operates a men's shelter.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The Mission’s addiction treatment takes the form of a year-long Christian Life Training Discipleship Program. This program provides spiritual based addiction recovery rooted in Christianity, and access to life skills training and job readiness skills.

As treatment nears completion, each resident is assigned a mentor for weekly sessions that continue for two months after completion of the program. Having finished treatment, residents can either move to their own accommodations, or remain on campus for up to a year, receiving continued one-on-one counseling, budgeting, and life skills training.

The facility’s gender-separate transitional living units provide the option of a further nine months in the Mission’s residential facilities. The center can also provide referrals for employment, housing and government aid to alumni.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The center employs some credentialed service providers, but many services are provided by community volunteers who are trained by the organization. While secondary sites show much appreciation for the volunteers, the sole alum polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center just two out of five stars for its staff’s level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Residents live in gender-separate dormitory-style housing, in two units that house 30 men and women each, and the transitional-living units provide 16 beds for men and eight for women. There’s an on-site learning center with 15 computers, and life skills classes touch on topics such as financial management, parenting skills, nutrition education, and vocational guidance. The sole alum polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility three stars for its accommodations, meals, cleanliness and exercise and leisure offerings.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The sole client to submit a review to Rehabs.com gave mostly positive feedback. The alum praised the center for its spiritual offerings. They also gave the center four stars for its treatment effectiveness. The alum gave just two stars for its holistic offerings, and would not recommend its treatment to others.

Reviews on secondary sites painted a different picture, skewing positive. On Google, the center had average ratings of 3.5 stars based on 25 reviews on Google. The reviewers praised the staff, particularly the volunteers.

On Facebook, where the center can manage its own page,[2] the facility has a high rating of 4.7 out of five stars. A majority of reviews appreciated the spiritual aspect of treatment. Though there were a handful of negative ratings, only two reviewers left any negative commentary to accompany their rating; both indicated a lack of respect for residents.

FINANCING

There is currently no information provided on the facility's website regarding its costs. Though not explicit, it appears the facility runs on charitable donation.

[1] https://goo.gl/Tji08v
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/missionatkc/reviews/
