ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH SYSTEMS – CASA AURORA

Jointly operated by the nonprofit organization Mental Health Systems (MHS) and the California Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (CDCR), Casa Aurora in Bakersfield provides clinical substance abuse and behavioral health treatment to adult female inmates who have 45 days to two years remaining of their prison sentence.

According to MHS, it is the only female rehabilitation community correctional center (FRCCC) in the state, and the first of its kind in the nation. MHS also operates more than 85 other programs throughout California.

The residential program gives women housing, food, and β€œgender-responsive programming.” While the program is designed for women struggling with addiction, substance use disorder is not a requirement for admission. Casa Aurora is among the 54.5 percent of California-based rehabs offering dedicated treatment for women, and among the 39.9 percent that treat criminal justice clients.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Casa Aurora provides intensive rehabilitation services for a range of difficulties. As well as substance use disorder, the center is equipped to address trauma, co-occurring psychiatric disorders, and domestic violence (which are treated at 48 percent, 54.9 percent, and 32.3 percent of California-based facilities, respectively).

Residents are expected to partake in leisure activities that foster social engagement, as well as educational development sessions and vocational training. and the facility provides GED training, life skills sessions, parenting skills, relapse prevention, and anger management.

Residents set life goals and set about achieving them, while also participating in wellness, exercise, and recreational activities. All clients leave with an aftercare plan, to help them remain clean and sober after treatment.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

At the time of this writing, details about treatment staff are not provided on the facility's website or elsewhere, but the single staffer polled by Rehabs.com to date indicated that the center employed three to four medical professionals, and gave Casa Aurora five staff for its staff's experience levels and four stars for their credentials.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Casa Aurora houses up to 83 women at a time β€” making it significantly larger than California's state average of 30 beds per residential rehab. There's currently no further official information about the facility's accommodations and amenities.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com hasn't yet polled any Casa Aurora alumni, but the center has overwhelmingly positive reviews on secondary sites, with a 4.8 out of five-star average rating based on five opinions on Facebook.[1] No alumni left any accompanying commentary with these reviews.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Staffer K.C., the single employee polled by Rehabs.com to date, indicated that they had concerns about the quality of care offered at Casa Aurora. "LOW STAFF MORAL....No INCENTIVES," K.C. wrote, giving the facility two stars for the overall quality of its care, three stars for its honesty and willingness to put clients' interests first, and five stars for its privacy practices.

But former staffer Cynthia took a much more positive view, writing on Facebook: "Good women's program. 89% success rate! I worked there! There is something that is touching about the way u r able to watch the women transform, right in front of your eyes!is."

FINANCING

There is currently no information provided on the facility's website regarding the program’s fees. However, because its residents serve the remainder of their prison sentences at Casa Aurora, the program is likely offered free of charge.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pages/Casa-Aurora-Womens-Correctional-Facility/123628944383848
