Editorial Review

ABOUT REACH PROJECT

Established in 1970, the REACH Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to early prevention, education, intervention, and substance abuse treatment. The central office in Antioch, Calif., offers outpatient services for both adults and teens. The organization also partners with the Antioch Police Department in offering a Youth Intervention Program for first-time misdemeanor drug offenders, giving them opportunity to change and avoid facing the Juvenile Justice System. Reach Project is among the 21.3 percent of California facilities to treat adolescents.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The REACH program for adults is 12-step based and centers mostly around meeting attendance. Recently, the program implemented a NIATx approach, a treatment modality specifically designed to improve behavioral health.

According to the organization's website, implementation of this approach has led to a partnership with the Contra Costa County Superior Court to assist with drug and/or alcohol-related cases. It gives judges the opportunity to order defendants to 90 days of treatment in the REACH program to avoid incarceration. Clients are required to attend two groups and two 12-step meetings a week, and pass consecutive drug tests every 30 days. REACH is among the 39.9 percent of facilities to offer specialized programming for criminal justice clients.

The program for teens is designed to examine each client’s drug and alcohol use, whether occasional or habitual. Programming promotes alternatives to drug use via peer support and decision-making groups. Treatment includes education on the impact drugs have on the brain and the progression of addiction, stress management workshops, and the development of refusal skills.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff; however, of the two former clients surveyed by Rehabs.com to date, one gave only two stars for staff support, while the other gave three stars for the staff’s level of training and experience.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com as of this writing gave REACH Project mostly positive reviews. One alum awarded the facility a perfect five stars for its treatment effectiveness, its family participation, its cleanliness, and its counseling options. “Good info if you really want to be clean and stay (clean),” they added.

The other alum gave the organization four stars for treatment effectiveness, writing that the program helped motivate them to stay sober; however, they also complained that there was “no acupuncture, gym, nutrition, etc.” and that the facility is in a high-crime neighborhood. While some might consider this a problem, this alum claimed that the “constant reminders all around me of what I wanted to avoid… I believed kept me motivated.”

The organization also received a five-star Google review from an alum who wrote "the friendly staff helped guide me where I needed to go to get the help I needed.”[1]

WHAT STAFF SAY

While Rehabs.com has yet to receive staff feedback to date, secondary sources revealed mix employee opinions. On Indeed, out of five stars, three employees offered ratings of four stars, three star, and one star[2]. While employees applauded their co-workers, reviewers tended to be critical of upper management and work environment.

FINANCING

At this time no information is available on the facility's website regarding cost or financing. The single alum polled by Rehabs.com on the facility's affordability gave a four-star rating..

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Reach-Project/reviews?fcountry=US&floc=Antioch%2C+CA
