ABOUT BAXTER REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

Baxter Regional Medical Center (BRMC) is one of 87 (77 percent) nonprofit treatment facilities in Arkansas. Located in the small, northern city of Mountain Home, BRMC also operates 17 clinics in the area. Among the services available at this acute-care medical hospital campus is a short-term detox program β€” First Step β€” for individuals struggling with withdrawal from alcohol and pain medications. There are only six hospital treatment facilities that offer detox services in the state, making up just 5.3 percent of all substance abuse treatment centers.

First Step clients may self-refer or be referred by their primary care physician.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

First Step cannot accommodate drop-in clients: treatment begins with a phone screening, conducted Monday through Friday.

The program is very short-term: most clients stay approximately three nights, during which time they are monitored and receive medical care to treat the symptoms of withdrawal. Since the program is so short-term, clients are not admitted until an aftercare plan has been established. First Step is intended as just that: simply the very first step in a program of recovery.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

BRMC as a whole has 1,400 employees, including more than 100 physicians, as well as 600 volunteers. The First Step program’s team includes a medical director, advanced nurse practitioners, and further nursing staff. In Arkansas, 98.9 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities have continuing education requirements for staff.

The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center five out of five stars for its staff’s level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

BRMC as a whole offers 268 beds, all of them in private rooms. There is currently no information provided by BRMC regarding the living arrangements and related offerings on the First Step program in particular; however, the median number of people in a hospital inpatient treatment facility at a given time is 13 clients.

The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center five stars for its meals & nutrition, five stars for its cleanliness, four stars for its accommodations, and four stars for its exercise and leisure offerings.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com had yet to receive facility feedback from former clients at the time of this writing. Secondary sites yielded no feedback on the First Step program in particular, and mixed feedback on the hospital in general.

There is an average rating of 2.6 stars from 37 Google users, where reviews repeatedly described unhelpful staff, misdiagnoses, billing problems, and long wait times.[1] An even lower rating of 2.5-average stars from three reviewers on YellowPages.com revealed the same problems with misdiagnoses.[2]

On its Facebook page, which the hospital can manage, 440 reviewers produced a 3.9-star average.[3] β€œI want to share how blessed I have been to have received such wonderful medical care for the last couple of months. I have been extremely sick with, at that time, an unknown illness. The staff at Baxter Regional Medical Center ER were very helpful and kind to me,” G.G. wrote in a representative review of the positive sentiments on Facebook.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date would strongly recommend the First Step program. The one criticism this individual noted was that the "security could be better," and the single low rating that they gave was two stars for holistic offerings. Otherwise, this loved one awarded four stars to the counseling options, the admissions and discharge procedures, and whether or not the facility was worth the cost. Five-stars were given for everything else, including family participation and the center's ability to treat co-occurring disorders. When questioned about facility strengths, they wrote, "small center" because it "can treat the patients one on one." This loved one added, "very helpful and respectful of our privacy, successful program."

FINANCING

The First Step program accepts accepts most health insurance policies and private pay, along with Medicare, which only 29 (25.7 percent) Arkansas treatment facilities accept, and Medicaid, which only 37 (32.7 percent)treatment centers in this state accept.

The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center five out of five stars for its affordability.

[1] https://goo.gl/1jDk3y
[2] https://www.yellowpages.com/mountain-home-ar/mip/baxter-regional-medical-center-463761089?lid=463761089
[3] https://www.facebook.com/pg/BaxterRegional/reviews/
