ABOUT PALO VERDE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

Located in Tucson, Ariz., and operating for more than half a century, Palo Verde Behavioral Health (PVBH) is a private psychiatric facility that provides inpatient and intensive outpatient (IOP) care for adults and adolescents struggling with mental health disorders, as well as co-occurring concerns of chemical dependency. The facility also provides a partial hospitalization program (PHP) for adults. Treatment for co-occurring substance abuse disorders includes medical detoxification and dual diagnosis therapy.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the Palo Verde Behavioral Health website, treatment programs are individualized, holistic, and strength-based. Cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapies (DBT) provide common foundations, while plans also draw from psychopharmacological and activity therapy modalities. A typical inpatient stay for detoxification is about five days, while psychiatric patients average a nine-day inpatient stay. Patients see a psychiatrist at least once a day.

To help minimize the discomfort of withdrawal, the facility utilizes oral medications. Following crisis stabilization, including detoxification if necessary, patients begin to participate in group therapy and therapeutic recreational sessions, which are both central to PVBH's programming. Movement, art, and pet therapies are provided on a regular basis, and family support groups are also available.

PVBH offers two levels of outpatient care for adults, partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient programs (IOP). The IOP runs on an eight-week cycle and is organized into several tracks, including one called “Moving Beyond” to treat substance use disorders. Specialized IOP tracks are also available for older adults, women, adolescents, and professionals. In PHP, which is designed to offer a higher level of structure, patients participate in five hours of daily group programming, Monday through Friday.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment staff at Palo Verde Behavioral Health in Tucson includes psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, master’s-level therapists, clinical social workers, and substance abuse counselors. All three individuals polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility four out of five stars for the staff’s level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Photos published on the PVBH website show clean, sparsely furnished, shared bedrooms in a modern, clinical facility. Each unit has access to an outdoor courtyard and a laundry room. Clients meet with a registered dietitian and no smoking is allowed on campus. Visitation is scheduled two days a week per unit.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com has yet to receive any alumni reviews for Palo Verde Behavioral Health. However, feedback found on secondary review sites tended to be negative; across four sites and 36 ratings (from alumni and loved ones), only one-third gave the facility more than two out of five stars. Former clients frequently reported experiencing a lack of care or help from staff who were characterized as inattentive and rude. Other criticisms included disorganization, understaffing, and problems with the diagnoses or treatment protocols provided.

Of 16 Google reviews, just one alum, an adolescent, reported feeling helped through the program and liking the staff.[1] Similarly, on Yelp, most reviewers complained about staffing and inconsistencies in treatment practices. Yet one alum, B.L., reported a much more positive experience, especially in the outpatient program. She described her treatment as solution-focused.[2]

All five Yellowpages.com reviewers (several repeated on other sites) granted the facility just one out of five stars apiece. Their complaints focused more on what they perceived as the financial motivation of PVBH, along with understaffing, cold and unprofessional staff members, and poor diagnosis and evaluation experiences.[3]

The sole alum to provide a written review on Facebook noted that she received help at PVBH, but that the staff was not well trained in addressing medical needs, also a significant concern expressed in a review by a former client’s parent.[4]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

By contrast, all three loved ones polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing indicated that they would recommend Palo Verde Behavioral Health to others, though they did also raise some concerns. Two felt that the center was understaffed, though the same reviewers praised the staff. “They are good at handling patients,” an anonymous loved one wrote. All reviewers gave the facility four out of five stars for its co-occurring disorders treatment and its counseling options. Two reviewers gave the facility's level of family participation four-star ratings, while the other loved one gave this metric a three-star rating.

Reviews from loved ones on secondary sources were more split. Negative reviews followed alumni trends, while a minority of family members reported positive treatment outcomes and helpful staff communication. C.M. cited comfort and compassion during intake, on Yelp.[5] Yet more parents reported unsatisfactory communication and unprofessionalism.

WHAT STAFF SAY

While Rehabs.com has yet to receive any feedback from former or current employees of Palo Verde Behavioral Health, the nine individuals who reviewed the facility on Indeed gave the facility an average rating of 2.22 out of five stars. Many employees concurred with alumni and loved ones’ reports of inadequate staffing. One therapist concluded that the overly busy environment resulted in “no therapeutic connection.” However, moderate reviewers tended topraise fellow treatment staff members and “their commitment to the care” of patients.[6]

FINANCING

According to PVBH’s website, detox is covered by most insurance plans, with the exception of Medicaid. Longer term treatment is covered by most major private and government-issued insurance plans, both in-network and out-of-network.

[1]https://goo.gl/28DPfh
[2] https://www.yelp.com/biz/palo-verde-mental-health-services-tucson-2
[3] https://www.yellowpages.com/tucson-az/mip/palo-verde-behavioral-health-1837533
[4] https://www.facebook.com/pages/Palo-Verde-Mental-Health-Services/117569034935657
[5] https://www.yelp.com/notrecommendedreviews/palo-verde-mental-health-services-tucson-2
[6] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Palo-Verde-Hospital/reviews?fcountry=US&floc=Tucson%2C+AZ
