ABOUT GOSPEL RESCUE MISSION – MEN’S CENTER

Founded in 1953, the Gospel Rescue Mission in Tucson, Ariz., offers a variety of services aimed to help the most vulnerable men, women, and children. As well as food and shelter, this center offers a long-term Christian residential rehab program for men who are struggling with substance abuse. It is one of the just 159 (46.6 percent) treatment centers dedicated to male-only treatment. Medically supervised detox is not available on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment starts with a thorough assessment to determine if the Gospel Rescue Mission’s services are a good fit for the client. There are separate living facilities for men and women with children. Although the program doesn’t discriminate against age, race, or gender, the facility cannot house those with certain criminal backgrounds or those who require a lot of medical assistance.

The core component of the addiction treatment program is the relapse prevention program, a goal-driven, long-term, bible-based discipleship that focuses on the individual’s relationship with God and other people. The program is also designed to help clients identify and work through the underlying issues that drive their addiction.

Other components of the course include counseling; life skills classes on budgeting, parenting, boundaries, and grief; G.E.D. training; career counseling, referrals to affordable housing; and legal assistance.

The men’s program has a particular emphasis on occupational therapy and career development, equipping each man with the tools to earn a living wage.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There is currently no information provided on the facility's website or otherwise regarding its treatment staff, though the website does indicate that the program is faith-based and that the board of directors includes three pastors. The sole individual polled by Rehabs.com on staff level of training and experience to date provided three out of five stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Daily meals and clothing are provided; however, any prescription medications that need to be taken should be secured beforehand by the client. Chapel services are available on-site.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The three alumni reviews submitted at the time of this writing to Rehabs.com for Gospel Rescue Mission are highly negative. One reviewer provided low, one-star ratings for treatment effectiveness and accommodations, remarking, "the showers are cold, leaking toilets and bedbugs," with another alum writing, "There are better places in Tucson that have MUCH BETTER STAFF!!]" Indeed, the third reviewer added that he felt mistreated by staff.

On its Facebook page, which Gospel Rescue Mission can manage, the facility earned 4.7 out of five stars from 82 reviews to date. [1] Positive reviewers expressed gratitude for their continued sobriety. In a representative review, John wrote, “I love this place... it is beautifully and wonderfully made...GRM has made a miracle out of me and my life... Amazing... Much LOVE”

But two Facebook reviewers suggested that some people fall through the cracks. Michael wrote, “Turned me away when I needed help after getting away from abusive and dangerous relationship because I had a child, said they only offer services to mothers with kids and not fathers with kids.” Reviewer Anthony added, “Once a place that could help you find a job and get off the street, now a revolving door of on the street back to the street.”

On Google, Gospel Rescue Mission earned four out of five stars from 108 users to date, though none of the comments touch upon substance abuse treatment.[2] Two, five-star ratings on Yelp as of this writing reveal contrasting opinions to Rehabs.com survey respondents.[3] "This is a better alternative than the slinky night culture. The staff are well groomed personally and the visiting preachers are emotionally uplifting with no brainwash science involved. Clean cloths everyday comes with the building like good food, a loving staff and good comradary clients," A.R. wrote.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one to submit a review for Gospel Rescue Mission praised the variety of programs and the location, giving five out of five stars for the accommodations, holistic treatment options, and the connectivity/visitor policy. Although overall agreeing that they would recommend treatment at this facility to others, the reviewer gave just three stars for counseling options and commented that the center was "too laid back."

FINANCING

Programs are offered free of charge. The facility’s programming is largely funded through donations. The sole individual surveyed by Rehabs.com to date on the center's affordability provided a four- out of five-star rating.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/GRMTucson/reviews/
[2] GoogleReviews

[3] https://www.yelp.com/biz/gospel-rescue-mission-mens-center-shelter-tucson
