ABOUT SCOTTSDALE ADDICTION TREATMENT AND COUNSELING

Scottsdale Addiction Treatment and Counseling, also known as Scottsdale Behavioral Health, offers intensive outpatient programming (IOP) for alcohol and drug addiction โ€” one of 176 IOPs in the state of Arizona. Ambulatory โ€” i.e. outpatient โ€” detoxification services are also available, including medication-assisted therapy (MAT) to assist withdrawal from alcohol and opiates. Outpatient-based detox is only available at 37 facilities in the state of Arizona.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

For clients in need of detox, staff will determine through an initial assessment whether they're appropriate candidates for outpatient-based detox. If they require an inpatient stay, they'll be referred to a hospital or inpatient detox facility.

If they're deemed good candidates for outpatient detox, they'll come back to the facility daily for three to seven days (for alcohol detox) or three to four days (for opioid detox). They'll be prescribed medications as appropriate, to keep them safe and comfortable during detox. These might include anti-craving and anti-relapse medications, such as Suboxone (which is available at 112 rehabs in the state of Arizona).

Following stabilization, clients have the option of continuing long-term medication-assisted treatment or gradually tapering their dose. For IOP candidates, an initial psychiatric and substance abuse assessment is performed prior to intake to determine each client's level of motivation and to create an individualized treatment plan. If a client's desire for recovery is low, he or she will first receive motivational enhancement therapy before being admitted into the IOP.

The substance abuse IOP lasts for 16 weeks, with clients meeting at least three times a week for two to three hours. Clients participate in individual, group, and family therapy, and are encouraged to follow a 12-step recovery program and attend outside meetings.

Group therapy topics include the neurobiology of addiction, the process of recovery, and the stages of change. According to the facility's website, staff can also assist with legal help for possible drug-related offenses, and the program uses random drug testing. Like 84.4 percent of rehabs in Arizona, the center also has services targeted to improve clients' social skills.

The center will also work with the client's support network, which may include family education sessions and collaboration with the primary care physician.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Treatment team members include board certified psychiatrists and addiction medicine physicians. The two individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the staff's level of training and experience gave it a three and a four out of five-star rating.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Both of the alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date would recommend Scottsdale Behavioral Health/Scottsdale Addiction Treatment and Counseling, and both gave the center five stars for the effectiveness of its treatment. Both reviewers also indicated that the center had exemplary staff support, giving this category a four-star and a five-star rating.

The single alum polled on the facility's performance in a wide array of areas gave it four stars in most of the evaluated metrics, including the overall quality of its individual and group counseling โ€” though they gave the center just two stars for its holistic offerings. "There was good staff support and overall consistency," one of the alumni wrote.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date gave lukewarm-to-positive feedback, awarding the center three- and four-star ratings for its holistic offerings, family participation, and counseling options. One loved one would recommend the center, while the other remained neutral on this question.

Both reviewers noted that the staff were very personable: "The employees were polite to family," one loved one wrote in a typical comment. In the only complaints, one reviewer wrote that the center was small, and the other added that the check-in process was very lengthy.

FINANCING

Scottsdale Behavioral Health will bill clients' insurance companies, though it's not clear whether the center accepts any insurance in-network. The two individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center's affordability gave it a three-star and a four-star rating.
