Editorial Review

ABOUT STONEWALL INSTITUTE

Stonewall Institute in central Phoenix provides intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) for adults struggling with substance use disorders, particularly those who identify as LGBTQ. The facility was just 70 (19.6 percent) of 358 of Arizona's total treatment facilities in 2016 that offered programs catering to individuals in this community. Stonewall is also in the 28.8 percent of facilities that provide court-ordered DUI programs and services.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Several evaluation services are available at Stonewall Institute, most in compliance with county and state court mandates, including assessments to reinstate a driver’s license. DUI classes are available on-site and online.

The facility’s more intensive treatment approach is holistic and integrative, incorporating special considerations for LGBTQ experiences with more broadly focused care, addressing spiritual, social, financial, familial, and physical recovery.

Stonewall's 10-week, evidence-based intensive outpatient program (IOP) meets three nights per week. The program involves group counseling and psychoeducational sessions that address addiction, sober living skills, and relapse prevention. Individual and cognitive behavioral therapy-based (CBT) counseling is also incorporated into programming. In addition, clients may participate in vocational counseling, as well as family and/or couples counseling.

Stonewall Institute’s IOP graduates have access to a lifetime of aftercare support in Phoenix, which involves weekly alumni gatherings, connections to local Alcoholics/Narcotics Anonymous, Celebrate Recovery, and SMART Recovery meetings, assistance in locating sober living arrangements, and referrals to psychiatric care.

Stonewall Institute touts its nonjudgmental, affirming atmosphere, in an upscale, “warm and professional” treatment setting.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

All counselors and group therapy leaders at Stonewall Institute hold master’s degrees. Staff members are also trained in providing LGBTQ-competent clinical treatment.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has yet received any reviews from former clients of Stonewall Institute to date. However, feedback on secondary review sites was overwhelmingly favorable. On Google reviews, 103 individuals contributed to an average rating of 4.3 out of five stars for the facility,[1] while on Yelp, 80 percent of 99 total reviews granted four- or five-star ratings.[2]

Across both platforms, a mix of alumni, family and friends, and community members recommended the facility for its professional, courteous, and knowledgeable staff. In a representative review on Google reviews, alum A.F. wrote that Stonewall Institute “made me feel safe and at ease.”

Likewise on Yelp, C.B. wrote of one therapist: “Most people come into the class very defensive and angry. I haven’t seen him fail to get someone to cool down and take the group therapy for what it’s worth.” Several alumni also commented that they learned more than they expected to. Alum V.S. described their instructor as “a very intellectual person very charismatic and makes sure everyone understands whats being taught.”

By contrast, negative reviews tended to complain about DUI service processes, characterizing it as disorganized and slow, and staff as judgmental. Two Google reviewers particularly mentioned feeling ashamed for their use of medical marijuana. A few also indicated that the center was motivated by financial gain.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

To date, five anonymous loved ones provided excellent feedback to Rehabs.com. Reviewers tended to strongly approve of the staff’s professionalism and attitudes, as well as the positive outcomes and value of the program.

Worth cost: 4/5
Staff’s level of training and experience: 4.2/5
Affordability: 3.8/5

Although two relatives of alumni cited occasional concerns with staff patience, nevertheless all represented the counselors in some way as helpful and most as compassionate. Two metrics indicated a fairly straightforward treatment approach with little variation or choice. Loved ones did agree that the treatment setting was highly satisfactory.

Cleanliness and maintenance: 4.6/5
Counseling options: 3.8/5

FINANCING

Stonewall Institute works with “most major insurance providers.” The facility also offers financing and financial hardship rates. DUI-related services have a price-match guarantee, according to the facility’s website.

CONCLUSION

The Stonewall Institute facility is both wheelchair and public transportation accessible.

[1] https://goo.gl/d8kXth
[2] https://www.yelp.com/biz/stonewall-institute-phoenix
