Editorial Review

ABOUT GREATER PHOENIX TEEN CHALLENGE

Teen Challenge is a national, nonprofit network of faith-based rehabilitation programs for people of all ages, founded by the Reverend David Wilkerson in New York in 1958. Greater Phoenix Teen Challenge, located slightly northwest of Downtown Phoenix, offers a long-term, residential Christian discipleship program for adult males aged 18+.

Teen Challenge Arizona also runs facilities in Casa Grande, Tucson, and elsewhere in Phoenix.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The program runs a minimum of 13 months, during which time Greater Phoenix Teen Challenge aims to help its residents to become "mentally sound, emotionally balanced, socially adjusted, physically well and spiritually alive."

According to a blog run by Teen Challenge Phoenix, the application process includes a interview, paperwork, and a health screening. Once they've been admitted to the program, residents are kept busy every day with a schedule of devotions, Bible study, work projects, chapel services, discipleship training, and recreational activities. Greater Phoenix Teen Challenge does not at present provide any further details about its treatment program, but other Teen Challenge locations typically keep residents busy with work projects for numerous hours a day, with the goal of instilling a healthy work ethic.

By way of aftercare, residents are encouraged to play an active role in their local community colleges and churches.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The leadership team for Teen Challenge Arizona includes several reverends; however, there are no medical professionals on staff. The single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the Greater Phoenix facility five out of five stars for its staff's level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Residents must provide their own bedding and come equipped with dress clothes and shoes. There is currently no further information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings, however, the single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility five stars for its cleanliness and its meals and nutrition, and four stars for its accommodations and exercise and leisure offerings.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date would strongly recommend treatment at Greater Phoenix Teen Challenge. "Great caring place they go out of their way to kelp you," the anonymous reviewer wrote, giving the facility four stars for its connectivity to the outside world and its ability to treat co-occurring disorders and five stars in almost all of the remaining treatment metrics, including its treatment effectiveness, holistic offerings, family participation, and counseling options.

Secondary sites yielded mixed-to-positive feedback at the time of this writing, with average ratings of 4.6 stars based on 35 reviews on Facebook (where the facility can manage its own page) and 3.8 stars based on 12 reviews on Google.[1] [2] The negative reviewers repeatedly raised concerns about the center's staff: "It's a good program but they need to hire some new people alot of the staff are only there for the money and not to help people," T.L. wrote in one such review on Google. However, numerous reviewers disagreed, expressing their deep gratitude to the facility and its staff for their successful treatment. "My life has changed because of Teen Challenge. I am a graduate. Staff members are put in their positions for a reason. This program is put in place for a reason," G.T. wrote in a representative review on Google.

FINANCING

There's a $100 application fee and a $1,500 intake fee. Teen Challenge does not accept insurance.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pg/TeenChallengeArizona/reviews/
[2] https://goo.gl/i8qXTH
