Editorial Review

ABOUT CPLC CORAZÓN TREATMENT CENTER

Located in Phoenix, Ariz., Corazón Treatment Center is a multicultural and bilingual residential substance abuse treatment center for adults operated by Chicanos Por La Causa (CPLC). Corazón is the Spanish word for heart, which reflects the personal recovery journey from addiction to sobriety. Short-term treatment and long-term transitional living programs for men are available, as well as a few holistic healing extras. In addition to health and human services, CPLC’s multi-million dollar budget goes toward economic development, education, and housing for residents in Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico. Detox is not available on site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The residential program lasts between 30 and 60 day, making CPLC Corazón Treatment Center one of Arizona’s 67 long-term, non-hospital treatment facilities. Treatment consists of daily group therapy and educational sessions on topics such as the addiction process, stages of change, and building recovery social supports. Individual therapy is provided each week.

Clients are taught about community support groups including the 12-Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, and are encouraged to attend meetings while in treatment. The 12-Step process is used in up to 73% of treatment facilities across the country. Clients that attend the meetings are more likely to continue these programs after they leave the primary treatment program, which can help in their long-term recovery.

The facility uses holistic treatment methods to facilitate whole-person recovery. It works with local organizations to provide extended services to clients. Staff and visiting athletic trainers facilitate alternative healing therapies, including morning meditation sessions, daily yoga and Tai Chi, and a sweat lodge rejuvenation experience.

Men who complete the treatment program and wish to remain in a supportive recovery environment can apply for admission into the facility's transitional living program. Transitional living lasts between three and six months. Clients live in a structured care facility while continuing treatment and working toward reintegrating back into the community.

CPLC provides support services, which include assistance with finding employment, pursuing educational goals, finding permanent housing, and reconnecting with family. The facility's website also mentions transportation to assist in achieving these goals. Vocational training and assistance is an important part of the transition process, and is offered in 38.6% of facilities across the country.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The center's website notes CPLC is governed by a multidisciplinary advisory board and executive leadership team. Most of the staff members are bilingual and able to provide therapy in both English and Spanish. The one alum polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing about the staff's level of training and experience gave five out of five stars for this survey metric.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Residential facility is located in an older residential area of Phoenix, in a two-story, peach-colored building reminiscent of a beach-side hotel. It can house up to 41 men, and 17 men can be accommodated in the transitional housing facility. The facility provides many of the amenities of home including cooking and cleaning services.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided positive reviews. One alum gave five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, accommodations and amenities, and meals and nutrition. "This place is the best," they wrote. The other alum gave five out of five-star ratings for the level of staff support, the visitor policy, and facility cleanliness. “The facility and the people there were great,” they wrote.

The seven individuals who left reviews on the center's unofficial Facebook page at the time of this writing provided an average rating of four out of five stars, though reviewers did not expound on their experience.[1]

FINANCING

Private insurance plans are accepted, and the facility is a part of the 64% of U.S. facilities that accept Medicaid. Self-pay is also accepted.

CONCLUSION

According to AZCentral.com, CPLC is the second-largest non-profit in Arizona, serving more than 160,000 people throughout Arizona and providing employment to more than 750 Arizona residents.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pages/Corazon-Drug-Alcohol-Treatment-Center/133601083357307
