Editorial Review

ABOUT ARIZONA SET FREE MINISTRY

Formerly known as Set Free Relief, Arizona Set Free Ministry is a non-profit Christian residential rehab program that serves homeless individuals in the Phoenix area. It provides housing, vocational training, counseling, and faith-based education during the eight-month program, according to one of the facility’s official Facebook pages. Detoxification services are not available through Set Free. It is one of 178 facilities across Arizona that works as a private nonprofit organization.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

At the time of this writing, few details regarding treatment practices are available from the facility, although the Arizona Set Free Ministry website places a strong emphasis on Christian concepts such as developing a relationship with God. According to another of the program’s Facebook pages, during the eight-month rehab program, clients participate in two phases of learning and recovery.

The initial phase involves acclimation to the day-to-day life at Set Free, introduction to biblical principles, participation in church services and activities, and the 12 Steps. During the second phase, residents incorporate vocational training and employment into their rehab schedule. These jobs help to offset the cost of housing and treatment. Clients in the second phase are also encouraged to offer guidance and mentorship to those in the first.

Residents also receive support to address struggles such as addiction and anger management.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The ministry’s board of directors is comprised of religious leaders of Set Free and other local Christian churches. The treatment team includes senior and associate pastors. While no other information is provided regarding staff qualifications, the sole alum polled by Rehabs.com indicated strong dissatisfaction in this area, rating the level of staff training and experience just one out of five stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

According to one of the facility’s websites, Set Free Relief can house roughly 75 residents. Throughout the program, clients have access to basic resources, which include bedding and meals. The facility also has a church, and photographs posted on facility web spaces feature mainly church meeting rooms and an outdoor meal line.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews from this facility’s alumni; however, feedback on Google and Facebook is overwhelmingly positive, especially emphasizing spiritual aspects and meals. Eight Google reviews averaged a rating of 3.8 out of five stars.[1] Reviewers there stated that the religious aspect of the facility was a strength.

On the Set Free Relief Facebook page, which may be monitored by the facility’s staff, 21 reviews averaged a 4.9 out of five stars. The reviewers praised the spiritual component of treatment here, and praised both the staff and the treatment effectiveness.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

In stark contrast to feedback from former clients, the sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com offered a much more critical perspective. Asked to rate on a scale of one to five their likelihood to recommend the facility to others, they offered only two stars. The alum gave low marks for cleanliness and upkeep of the facility and opportunities for exercise and leisure activity. Opportunities for family participation in treatment and affordability of the program were rated more favorably, but ultimately the respondent wrote in conclusion: “Bad leadership and facilities.”

FINANCING

According to the facility’s websites, residents do not pay any out-of-pocket fees. The program operates based on donations and revenue from professional services provided to the local community.

CONCLUSION

A March 2015 Arizona Republic article referenced Set Free in relation to the death and previous drug-related arrest of a pastor involved with what appears to be a related organization, Redeemed Outreach Center. The eight-month rehab program is associated with Redeemed in the story, but at the time of this writing Redeemed is no longer active.

[1]https://goo.gl/hEPwT6
[2]https://www.facebook.com/pg/setfreephoenix/reviews/?ref=page_internal
