<p><strong>ABOUT VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA ALASKA</strong></p> <p>As a part of a larger nonprofit ministry founded in 1896 by Christian social reformers, Volunteers of America Alaska provides <strong>residential treatment for clients ages 13 to 18, as well as outpatient (OP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) substance abuse treatment for clients ages 12+</strong>. Additional offerings include affordable housing, substance abuse outreach and education, support services for the elderly, and programming for first-time juvenile offenders. <strong>Detox</strong> is not available on site. <a href="https://www.recovery.org/topics/extended-recovery-programs/" target="_blank">Aftercare services</a> are available for clients that complete treatment. </p> <p><strong>TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT</strong></p> <p>Treatment at Volunteers of America Alaska begins by submitting an application for specific service programs. Each program has its own assessment paperwork and application that are reviewed by admissions counselors. Clients that qualify for programs are contacted and enrolled in the programs. </p> <p>Treatment consists of faith-based practices combined with traditional talk and recreational therapy methods. Recreational therapies are provided through multiple outdoor programs including Camp Hope and the outpatient programs. Clients participate in camp-like activities including water sports, hiking, and crafts. At the same time, clients participate in informal and formal education experiences to learn more about addiction and substance abuse prevention. </p> <p>Aside from substance abuse counseling, clients also participate in academic and wellness education. Academic education services are provided through a partnership with the Anchorage School District. Wellness services consist of <strong>milieu therapy</strong> and <strong>sober living</strong> practices. Such as nutrition counseling. </p> <p>The length of treatment is determined by the treatment method. Residential treatment lasts five to seven months while outpatient services generally last 12 weeks. <strong>Weekly aftercare services</strong> are provided to clients that complete these programs. </p> <p>Volunteers of America Alaska offers several other non-treatment services, including outreach, prevention, and intervention services for youth and families. <strong>Children affected by their parents’ substance abuse may attend Camp Hope</strong>, and the organization provides <strong>workshops for families affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.</strong></p> <p><strong>STAFF CREDENTIALS</strong></p> <p>According to the Volunteers of America Alaska’s website, Volunteers of America Alaska employs counselors, milieu specialists, and residential care assistants. Recreational and wellness therapy leaders are available to coordinate treatment services as needed. The facility and staff are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. </p> <p><strong>ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES</strong></p> <p>Volunteers of America Alaska’s residential facility is surrounded by forests and mountain views. It houses <strong>up to 24 clients at a time</strong>. The facility’s website depicts a clinical environment, but common areas are equipped with large picture windows that let in plenty of natural light. The area around the facility has access to mountain, forest, and lake areas that are used for recreational activities. </p> <p><strong>WHAT ALUMNI SAY</strong></p> <p>On its official Facebook page, which the facility can manage, Volunteers of America Alaska earned an average of 4.8 out of five stars from 14 reviews. <small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-1"><sup>[1]</sup></a></small> Eleven of the reviews were five out of five stars. The review was mostly positive, with four out of five star ratings provided for the program’s treatment effectiveness, its exercise/leisure options, family participation, counseling options, and treatment for co-occurring disorders. </p> <p>The staff member also provided a four-star rating for the facility’s cleanliness/maintenance, but submitted a rating of <strong>only two out of five stars for the center’s holistic offerings</strong>. “We provide affordable and complete counseling for our clients with a schedule set up around their schedules. If we cannot fully treat their needs, we have a full referral contact list through the 12-like organizations we partner with for the total treatment of our clients,” they wrote.</p> <p><strong>FINANCING</strong></p> <p>Volunteers of America Alaska accepts most private insurance providers as well as Medicaid. Treatment fees are adjusted on a sliding scale depending on the client’s financial situation.
