Editorial Review

ABOUT MISSION OF HOPE

Mission of Hope, located in Mobile, Alabama, offers residential treatment to adult men struggling with substance use disorder. Set on 40 sprawling, private acres, the facility's 90-day, faith-based program emphasizes spiritual wholeness to maintain recovery.

Mission of Hope is one of 45 substance abuse treatment facilities in Alabama to offer treatment tailored to men, which make up about 33 percent of all treatment facilities in the state. A similar program, Haven of Hope, is offered for women.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment is based on principles of Christian faith. Participation in Bible studies and nightly church services are central to the facility’s three-month treatment plan. Addiction education, anger management classes, recreational therapy, and vocational training are also important components of the program.

In addition, the facility schedules regular group counseling sessions to address gender-specific issues common among men in recovery. When appropriate, marriage and family counseling is available. Loved ones can visit on Sundays but must first participate in the facility’s family program before having visitation privileges.

To promote self-reliance and a successful transition back into the community, Mission of Hope offers GED preparation classes and vocational training to residents. It also runs a mechanical and woodworking shop, allowing residents to learn and practice these job skills while in early recovery.

After program graduation, residents who require structured aftercare and meet certain criteria may reside at the facility’s on-site halfway house for an additional 90 days. While men are at the halfway house, they are expected to have a job and prepare for independent life.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There is currently no information available on Mission of Hope's website regarding its staff credentials.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Mission of Hope houses up to 50 men at a time in shared, dorm-style rooms. The campus is tobacco-free — no nicotine products of any kind are allowed, including patches and gum.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Beau, the one former clients surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing, gave Mission of Hope a negative review and criticized the program's strict religious schedule. "They make you go to church 3 times a day plus bible class the rest of the time they work," he wrote. "About 1 in 6 people actually make it the whole 90 days."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The three loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date gave Mission of Hope mixed to positive feedback. Two of the three respondents noted that they would recommend the program to friends and family, and awarded the facility four or five out if five stars for its counseling options, its cleanliness, its family participation, and its leisure activities. "They are very understanding and caring," one of the two loved ones wrote. "I'd recommend this rehab to someone with mild addiction."

The third respondent, while noting that the program had "great nurses," told Rehabs.com that they would not recommend the program to friends or family. They awarded the facility just one or two out of three stars for its family participation, its counseling options, it's staff's level and training and experience, and its connectivity. The reviewer noted that the program offered poor visiting hours.

FINANCING

The program is free of cost. Supported by donations and its thrift shop, Mission of Hope is one of just six treatment facilities in Alabama (four percent) to offer substance abuse treatment that does not accept payment.
