ABOUT LIGHTHOUSE, INC.

Founded in 1974 and located on the outskirts of the small town of Cullman, Ala., Lighthouse, Inc. is a nonprofit residential treatment center for men ages 21 and older who are struggling with substance abuse and have completed a 28-day residential rehab in the past year. The facility is one of only 19 long-term residential facilities in Alabama. Medical detox is not available, and all clients must be free of any mood-altering chemicals — possibly including prescription drugs — upon admission.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

To be admitted, incoming clients must have had a psychosocial assessment within the last six months diagnosing them as dependent on alcohol and/or drugs. The program lasts 90 days and is based on the 12-step model of recovery.

Lighthouse, Inc.'s programming utilizes Recovery Dynamics, a comprehensive course for teaching and navigating 12-Step. Residents also attend group and individual counseling session, receive relapse prevention training, participate in recreational activities, and perform normal life tasks such as local shopping trips.

Lighthouse aims to help its residents to secure employment by referring them to external agencies, such as Alabama Vocational Rehabilitation Services, and introducing them to local employers.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The facility is staffed 24/7. No further information about staff credentials is provided. Out of five stars, the two alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date on the staff’s level of training and experience gave two and three stars for this aspect of the facility.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Lighthouse aims to provide a home-like environment and nutritional meals for its residents. Up to 12 residents at a time share simple rooms for two or three, and there are common areas with comfortable furnishings. Transportation to 12-step meetings and work is provided, so long as the job is within the city limits. Residents may smoke in designated areas.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, the three alumni polled by Rehabs.com offered mixed opinions concerning the facility. One alum, Michelle, didn’t appreciate a perceived one-size-fits-all treatment approach. The alum offered five-star ratings for the facility's cleanliness, though gave one-star ratings for the facility's counseling options and discharge planning. “They treat everyone exactly the same regardless of personal issues or problems,” the alum wrote.

However, another alum, David, appreciated the program’s style: “They allowed people to recover in a general way. They did not judge,” he wrote. Offering five-star ratings for the facility's ability to resolve conflict and the effectiveness of lead counselors, David also appreciated the opportunity to work during treatment and to receive government funding.

On Facebook, which the facility can manage, 14 reviewers gave the facility an average rating of 4.9 out of five stars.[1] Many of the reviewers praised the staff members and credit the facility with their sobriety. In a representative review, alum Scott wrote: “This place changed my life. Great management.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

While Rehabs.com has yet to receive any reviews from this facility’s affiliated loved ones, on CiteHealth, the facility earned 4.25 out of five stars from four reviewers.[2] The two loved ones offered polarizing opinions. “Thank you for giving us our brother back!”, one family member wrote.

However, a parent criticized the lack of alcohol screenings. “My son went there as a court order for alcoholism & was NEVER tested for alcohol ony drugs which he does not abuse. Not pleased,” they wrote.

FINANCING

The admission fee is $125. Once they have secured employment, residents are charged room and board on a sliding-scale basis. The center does not appear to accept insurance.

[1]https://www.facebook.com/pg/TheLighthouseOfCullmanLlc/reviews/

[2]http://citehealth.com/rehab-centers/alabama/cities/cullman/lighthouse-inc
