ABOUT CENTER OF HOPE

Headquartered in Anniston, Ala., Center of Hope is a nonprofit, which make up about 60 percent of Alabama treatment facilities, that offers residential services for adult men and women who are struggling with substance abuse. The Christian ministry's 12-month program does not include medical treatment; therefore, clients in need of detoxification or treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders should seek assistance elsewhere.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

During their year-long stay, clients are provided with faith-based substance abuse treatment, as well as basic human needs, including clothing and food. Treatment includes both individual and group Christian counseling, which, according to the center’s website, aims to inspire recovery through the “knowledge of Jesus Christ.” Clients also spend a significant portion of their stay in Bible study classes.

In addition to the program’s faith-based components, Center of Hope offers GED preparation, literacy classes, and job skills training so that clients may pursue a career once they complete treatment, which makes the center one of the 48 (37.2 percent) of Alabama treatment facilities to offer employment assistance.

“Moving Forward,” a class that combines fellowship, ongoing support, and Bible study, is offered to program graduates.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to Center of Hope’s website, one-on-one counseling is administered by “Christian counselors.”

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Center of Hope provides residents with basic dormitory-style accommodations, food, and clothing. Residents are expected to participate in random drug testing.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The four alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing submitted mixed reviews. Two individuals offered their recommendations, along with some minor critiques. One alum felt that the center needed better holistic offerings, but provided above-average ratings in nearly every other category, including the center’s counseling options, its affordability, and its family participation. Joy, another alum, found the program’s follow-up to be lacking, but reported developing “a stronger relationship with God.”

The two other survey respondents found Center of Hope’s staff and programming to be unnecessarily strict. “It was faith based and they were ridiculously strict and they made you work in their thrift stores for no pay. I left the program early because they would not let me go when my daughter's baby was born,” Jerre told Rehabs.com. Miranda, also an alum, felt that the center’s staff treated residents “awful.” “You were not able to express your true feelings and there was punishment for the small things like 1 hair on a sink or no talking outside,” she wrote in her review.

On Google, 79 reviewers provided an average rating of 4.2 out of five stars.[1] While many individuals characterized the program as “awesome” and life-changing, multiple reviewers were critical of the center’s work program, which they found exploitative. “It's a place for the one that are slaves to the devil .and you can go there and be a slave to the leadership of the center of hope and watch them get rich of of your labor,” Lee wrote in a representative review.

The four reviewers on Yellowpages.com, three of whom identified themselves as alumni, provided an average rating of two out of five stars.[2] Benjamin, who was asked by staff to repent for his “sin” of homosexuality, used his review to warn others who identify as LGBTQ. “They told me that I had to have my bags packed by a certain time that same day and that I needed to arrange a ride or that I would be placed on the streets,” he wrote. One reviewer with a seizure disorder reported poor treatment and M. described the center as a “work camp.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing submitted generally positive reviews for Center of Hope. Christian based...one year stay..teaching great work ethic...self supportive ...turns no one away!” he told Rehabs.com.
